All 3 localization companies have a pretty solid lineup, tbh.
Well, there's more to cost than just the UMD/Cartrige.Still,by the sounds of it,it's a cost/benefit issue, with retail definitely NOT helping with them increasingly ditching niche games for the AAA games,or worse,pre-owned.
It's a shame, but unless they want to actually bleed money, that's how they'll (and a lot of niche loc companies) have to roll from now on for at least the not-so-popular releases.
Ummm... see my above response to Sagadego?
Seriously, it's exactly as I said above. It's not like we don't WANT to make you guys happy... we just can't always do it! You're asking us to take risks that could literally bankrupt us and force us to go out of business. How could we possibly agree to do that? That might make those of you who refuse to support DD-only games happy in the short term, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make ANYBODY happy in the long run. Least of all us, who would be out on the streets in this economy looking for new jobs!

Why you don't try to make us (me) happy? Why can't you release physical games for PC in Europe? Why handhelds? Why not for real gaming platforms?
Yes, you don't have to answer on this one because I pretty much know the answer. That is life, and it sucks.
But from those three I'd like to keep at least few if I have to lose some. PC/physical releases/Europe. With XSEED going Steam I'm rather happy since I ll have my PC and Europe. Some PSP titles have retail versions so I have that too with Europe- since it is not a region locked. For 3DS I'd love to try, but there's not much I can do about that. Overall I'm quite pleased (might be only temporary imagination caused by Steam Ys news). And lol I ended up putting some serious stuff in this post though I had thought only to to go with that nonsense. Whatever. Cheers!
Not for digital titles. The Vita may not be able to play PS1 classics just yet, but Sony's promised that they're coming, and I see no reason to doubt that they would. It took them a while to get them working on the PS3 as well, IIRC. And with PS2 games starting to show up as PSN downloads too -- and Virtual Console on Wii covering just about every old Nintendo system -- I'm thinking backwards compatibility is something we're going to see get more and more expansive in the realm of digital gaming.
And Lalimith: We can't do physical releases on Europe because we have no physical presence there (and we're nowhere near profitable enough to open an official European branch!), but we have been making a concerted effort to release our titles in Europe digitally whenever possible. Really, whenever we haven't, it's because we couldn't -- either because there was no real option to release digitally in Europe (Fishing Resort), because the game was already released in Europe through another company (Solatorobo) or because the game was already under negotiation for future European release by another company (Trails in the Sky), among other possible reasons.
We've had a pretty good track record with European releases, though, so far, and we don't have any plans to stop now. (:

You know, I like to think that the situation with Working Designs is kind of instructive here because they always went to the 9s with what they did to appease fans but they ended up crashing and burning. The fact of the matter is it's easy to say only go for niche games that would be great physical releases but the problem is THOSE GAMES tend to be next to impossible to pick up because they're already committed to one publisher or another in Japan that either will localize it themselves or pass on it with no chance for licensing. I know in my ideal world all the JRPGs would sell millions of copies and the CODs of the world would have to go to DD only releases to make ends meet but...it is what it is. If being DD only is the only way I can experience quality games like Corpse Party, I'd rather go with that than not being able to play it without importing it AND learning Japanese.
