    Android and iOS gaming

There are still hecklers and naysayers out there that insist that neither OS and the devices they're on are fit for (hardcore) gaming.

But, boys and girls, the Android and iOS platforms are one of the hottest things out there right now!

While their presentation may not be ideal (in the sense that you have the controls overlaying the gameplay area), people don't really seem to care if the games are fun and play well! :3 Besides, there are third party solutions if you're concerned about the overlay controls and lack of tactile buttons.

Lots of the big names like Capcom, Cave, Konami, and Square Enix are supporting these mobile devices and they're totally not dumping casual BACONBACONBACONBACON onto them either!

What's your take on these systems? :D

I've really tried to get into iOS gaming since purchasing my iPad 2, but I just don't think the quality is there yet with most developers. I'm sure there are a few gems in the mix, but there is so much garbage that they're really difficult to find.

It really bugs me that games can go live whenever, and quickly get lost in the abyss of junk. At least on the major gaming platforms you know 99% of most games are releasing on Sunday or Tuesday, so it's much easier to catch things as they release. I'm sure some better visibility on gaming community sites would help with this, but it's a major roadblock for the average consumer.

I will say I have enjoyed the digital conversions of things like scrabble, monopoly, and uno. It's much more fun to sit on the couch comfortably with my girlfriend and play rather than sitting at a table or kneeling at the coffee table trying to play on a board.

Android doesn't seem to have a whole lot of gaming support behind it, emulators aside. The iPhone is another story though...as for the quality, since my carrier doesn't have an iPhone, I couldn't tell you there. :P

Neph... Seriously... Let's not go around insulting other people, OK? "I don't like phone gaming" is fine to say, but associating a harmless leisure activity with illegal and immoral behavior, effectively insulting every single person who engages in such activity? Not cool.

Please try to think before you post. General rule of thumb: If you're directly insulting other human beings, IT'S NOT COOL.

Phone games are great for pick-up-and-play games, but I have yet to see a game that has the depth of a traditional handheld game. It seems virtually impossible to have a longer, more involved game without any buttons whatsoever.

I use my iPhone all the time for gaming and I love it. I've got about 700+ game apps on my computer, and have been incredibly impressed with the amount of creativity in a vast majority of them. Touch screens are great for puzzle games, tower defense games, strategy RPGs, turned based RPGs, board games, arcade games, etc., and there's actually a few platformers that have had some legitimately impressive and comfortable control layouts as well. I'll never stop buying actual consoles and retail releases, but phone gaming has definitely come a long way from the days of "Snake".

Does anyone have any personal favorites from iOS or Android? Mine from iOS are Solomon's Keep, Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, Battleheart, Sword & Poker/Sword & Poker 2, Dungeon Raid, Ninjatown: Trees of Doom, Tiny Tower, League of Evil, Rolando/Rolando 2, Beat It!, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Tilt to Live, Edge, and I've really enjoyed having SquareEnix's releases (especially Chaos Rings) and Konami's Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night.
