Their translations were no worse than virtually any RPG from the SNES-PS1 era. Good? No. But not near as bad as all the complaining implies...
Er, I need to choose my words carefully here... so I'm just going to quote A Tear of Vermilion, once again:

    "I didn't have eaten a unusual today."

I *dare* you to find a worse line in any English-language SNES or PS1 game.

Robotrek had a pretty bad translation too, but it was nowhere near the level that was the first Bandai Namco LoH translation. There are books that make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER due to the translation. If XSEED put out games that had Babelfish level of translation, they'd probably have the whole series out by now, but I'd rather the series be done right and have minimal errors than to have a textbook example of Engrish out of control. The other two LoH translations improved markedly (by the point the last one was almost good!), but after the first, there pretty much was nowhere to go but up.

I probably could find something similarly awful from Breath of Fire 2, although that was just as infamously bad.

Really, the Gagharv PSP games were top-tier awful. Even being comparable to BoF2 is a bad thing.

How does something like that even get through Sony QA? Do they not check the text at all?

You'll have to do better than that. That line makes sense and is grammatically correct. It's WEIRD, sure... but it's not WRONG.

(Well, it's WRONG, but more in the metaphysical sense... if you get me.)

Classic Tear of Vermillion lines, episode 34:

"He is not the kind of person who can walk out of a girl who can use his help and keep on a journey."

You think that's bad English, but it's really a Freudian example of how a child emerges from the womb and immediately emerges a teenager with heroic aspirations.

    Probably.
