    Monday News MEGATON! (S)

Even though that ryhmes, I can't promise megaton news to start off each week

    Megaton 1:

Sony buys Gaikai. About time. Think MS was rumoured to be looking at Onlive, but the tech isn't up to snuff (artifacting/ latency). So this was a fairly shrewd move. Would have been nicer to see at E3 than 20m of Wonderbook though. In retrospect, I wonder if that's why that part of the show felt so "padded", because they hadn't finalized the deal and just needed filler.

    Mini megaton!

RO tops 100K sales!!! (Edit: Just noticed the Lord of All Things RO - Shizuka - beat me to this one o.O)

That's nothing but good news for the franchise.

P.S. The Secret World is the most incredible MMO I've ever played - setting/ gameplay/ story/ graphics. Non-linear character building and progression. A real breath of fresh air.

Just because you're bleeding money doesn't mean you still don't actually have money. Aside from the Gaikai purchase, Sony just purchased EMI Music for $2.2 billion last week.

They're still profitable in certain divisions (music/ movies/ games) and I'm pretty sure Kaz mentioned those would be the ones pushing forward with the "new" Sony. They really need to streamline their product offerings; cut the pricey mid range tvs and offer low and high end sets on par with Samsung (in terms of price). Plus, regarding PS brand in particular, they could go two ways next gen. Offering both super cutting edge pricey hardware for the enthusiasts and people who need physical formats, while at the same time streaming PS4 content (via sever PS4s) to PS3s, PS Vita's whatever. If you read their announcement, it specifically mentions showcasing games, which is rather telling. "PS4" content is a very ambiguous term, as it can apply to high end games on megaservers running games proprietary hardware at mass distribution could never dream of. There are a ton of possibilities with this tech.

My Sony shares have been in the crapper lately, but if they actually manage to get their act together and cut certain divisions entirely, this could really unify them. Now, the speed at which they beat their competitors to market will be the biggest determining factor. As well as the quality of the network that they deliver. Though again, Gaikai was much further along in terms of tech than OnLive is. So in terms of investment its the better deal.

Edit: What Takao said as I was typing this +1

Sony can't compete with Samsung on pricing as long as they're a Japanese company. And they're hardly the only one struggling to compete with the Korean companies.

I'm not really sure where Sony would be going with this unless it's a very forward thinking move. I mean, cloud-based PS4 doesn't really make a lot of sense, unless it was offered as an optional/subscription based SKU (but not the main SKU). I don't think they would stick with the PS3 as the main box for that, it's too expensive to manufacture to be worth it. But as an option, streaming PS4 games to PS3 is really interesting.
