Growlanser's a great strategy/RPG hybrid series. The nice thing is that IV has virtually nothing to do with the other games so you can jump right into it without having touched anything else. From what I've heard IV contends with I in terms of being the best in the lot, but seeing as how I haven't played it yet, I can't really say how it compares to II, III, and V. What I can say I'm excited about is that the game has a lot of replay value, so potentially you could play the game for hundreds (!) of hours before seeing everything.

I really have nothing to add to this topic at this time, but...

    But I'm hoping it'll be Vita-compatible day-one, unlike Gungnir.

I really doubt it will be. Sony doesn't seem to care about prioritizing new releases for Vita (actually atm they don't seem to care about Vita at all).

I think that the only thing they care less than the PS Vita, it'd be the PSP. Gungnir wasn't even listed on the Playstation Blog last week, and a few of the latest PSP games still aren't Vita-compatible.

It really is a shame. Ive said this on a previous topic, but if corpse party book of shadows was to come out, id love to play it on my OLED screen. Its pretty harsh to see the manufacturers treatment and non support towards such an amazing piece of technology (yes, im not even speaking of the japanese/western publishers... that will be reserved for some other topic lol).
