Yeah, I get that it can be a really jarring move, especially since a majority of gamers seem to prefer dedicated consoles over handheld devices. I guess a big part of it is also that the Japanese market today REALLY favors handhelds, unlike the United States model which seems to favor consoles. Can't speak for any other territories, though, lol. xP So, they're ALWAYS thinking domestic market first, and they probably see "Oh look, PSP/3DS games keep charting high." Yeah, there's exceptions like Dragon's Dogma [as of late] and others, but doesn't it seem like more and more chart-toppers are handheld, or am I going completely bonkers? XDD
Plus, maybe Atlus is worried about the release window. Maybe they're worried it'll come out at the end of the HD consoles' life cycles with their estimated development time?
It's a bummer, since series jumps can really alienate an audience, though. :[ So I see both sides of the issue. No matter what the platform, however, I think Atlus will make a kick-bacon game![]()
Remember, handhelds are much bigger in Japan.
Also the 3DS lends itself well to first person dungeon crawlers, Atlus probably decided this after working on the consoles, vita and 3DS. Strange Journey was amazing on the DS, and was a main title despite not being numbered, they're porting Soul Hackers on the 3DS, making Etrian Odyssey IV on it and now they're doing this.
Vita has P4U and G and PSP had P1, P2IS and P2EP.
They know what they're doing.

Also the site's been live all day.
And Kaneko does the SMT designs so he'll no doubt be back.
I moreso meant alienating their console-preferring fans, since most Persona titles, as well as SMT Nocturne were on console, and many people have gotten USED to playing larger RPGs on console. I don't feel left out for precisely that reason, because I'm used to my Atlus games on handheld by now, but I can see where some people get the "What is this?" feeling from. o:
Fun fact: Atlus' last console RPG was in 2008. Which was Raidou 2.
While everyone here's like OMGWAI when it comes to the move from traditional consoles, it makes perfect sense for companies to move to the most profitable platforms, which in Japan of late have been portable (and given the Japanese economy, I don't see that ever changing). I don't like portable gaming too much myself in most circumstances, but if I want to play JRPGs, it's pretty much a given now.
There are 3 games that will make me buy a 3DS and all of them need to come out here before I can justify myself purchasing one.
This game
Project X Zone
Layton vs Phoenix Wright
Since those are the only 3 games that have grabbed my attention so far I can't see myself justifying the purchase unless they make it out over here.

it would be cool if someone who know Japanese here translate the text that appeared sometimes in above trailer
