    Unreal Engine 4 revealed

I think this is the first we've seen of next-gen tech? For those that don't know, Unreal Engine 3 is the technology that that vast majority of XBox 360 and Playstation 3 games run on. So this is effectively a preview of PS4/XBox720 graphics.

This excites me. This can only mean another unreal game is approaching.

They released a demo video of it last year I think (with a guy that resembled the main char from Deus Ex) and that already looked amazing. Just recently they've been showing off new renderings and stills. And wow, looks great! ...but looks aren't everything and if jacks up game prices AND makes them shorter, then bleh :/

There's the next-gen fire signal...which sucks, cause my PC is not even nearly ready for it.

If it turns out like their last Unreal game, than I'd rather that not be true...

You're talking about the Samaritan tech demo. That one was made on a late Unreal Engine 3 build and required 3 SLI'd 580's to run, this new one runs on a single kepler card (600 series),although it looks (very) slightly worse.

Ugh, could've been awesome but yeah dude I agree with you on that. Especially since trying to play online was a total disaster, and that's the most important mode. I was extremely heart broken.

    Those particles o.o
The link has pictures of a wireframe of the whole thing and that's pretty impressive too. Looks neat, but the current gen isn't going down without a fight as of right now. I'd say we have at least a year before any of this comes in to play.

As a graphics wh0re, this excites me. I'd love to see an MS/ Sony next gen announcement this year, but I don't have my hopes up. This gen is still profitable for each company and Sony has the Vita to resuscitate.

If anything, the market is ready for new hardware right now. And not $599.99 hardware that will take years to hit mass market pricing. April was a horrible, terrible month for the industry, and May is likely to follow apart from Diablo 3 and maybe Max Payne.

I don't expect next-gen to be able to handle that much geometry, particles, and lighting at once. Some of the most well optimized games might come close to looking as good as those shots, but will be corridor/linear experiences running at 720p and (hopefully a solid) 30 FPS.

Most people on other forums have said they felt incredibly underwhelmed by those shots actually.

Particle swarms and geometry tessellation are sort of a given for next gen seeing that PC hardware has had the ability to do them efficiently sense DX11 came out in 2010. But beyond those things there's also scene-wide dynamic lighting w/simulated GI, Bokeh dof, complex cloth simulation, and higher texture resolutions. And if in doubt about how much more powerful next gen consoles can be then current ones, keep in mind that Crysis came out in 2007
