SC and Type-0 are developed differently. It has nothing to do with Square Enix.

Actually, I don't believe Square Enix has any such thing. As I understand it, Final Fantasy Type-0 is on PSN as two separate downloads. Once you reach the end of the first "disc," you can save your game, exit, then fire up the second "disc" and load your saved game to continue.

This option isn't available to SC, however, since SC players don't actually "finish" disc one at any point -- the game is set up so that half the game world is on one UMD, and the other half is on the second. So as you play, you'll be switching discs with some degree of regularity.

Thanks for clarifying--I assumed Type-0 was one big download with the two halves linked, since that's how multi-disc PSOne Classics work.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I am just curious. While I see this as being rather uncomfortable, is it really such a big issue? I can't see switching discs digitally being any more annoying than switching a disc manually and if everyone in the niche audience wants it so bad I don't see why not pull all the stops to put it on PSN like that. I mean...would switching discs digitally be such a horrendous thing to do? I would assume it would be somewhat like when I switch discs on a PSX game that I am playing on my PS3, hit the home button then select the next disc, if anything it sounds more comfortable (other than the huge size of two separate files which is what I am assuming would be another issue).

Considering the 2 UMD issue, SC would be the rare game I'd actually prefer in digital format.

I assume the PC version was on one disc? Japan took a long time to adopt DVD as the standard for retail PC games.

Original PC version was on one DVD, yeah. Falcom's used DVDs for their PC games since the early 2000s, man! They're totally ahead of the curve that way.

Kirbs: I don't think you quite understand. PSP games don't have that functionality. You can't just hit the home button, then select the next disc -- that functionality was only ever implemented by Sony for PS1 titles, not PSP (since so few PSP games were ever distributed on more than one UMD). Instead, you'd have to save your game, then literally exit out to the XMB menu, select the second disc (which is stored on your memory stick as an entirely separate game), let it boot up to its title screen, then load your savegame from the first disc and continue playing.

For a game that only ever asks you to switch discs once, it's not a bad solution. But for a game that asks you to switch discs repeatedly, it's unprofessional-seeming at best, and impossible at worst. See, games that ask you to switch discs once usually prompt you to save your game before swapping discs anyway. In SC's case, however (as far as I can recall, anyway), you're just prompted to switch discs when you pass from one half of the game world into the other -- no save prompt. And saving right before swapping won't work -- once you boot up the second disc and tell it to load that savegame, it'll notice that your location is in a part of the world that exists only on disc one, and it'll just prompt you to insert disc one. It's literally impossible to connect one half of the game to the other via digital download without Falcom reprogramming the entire game to support it (or Sony adding support for multi-disc PSP titles to PSN, but considering that there are only... what, two such games in existence? I don't see that happening...).

...That's the problem as I understand it, anyway. I might be wrong, but it seems only logical...

Interesting thought, SC is famed at being the first 2 UMD game, while that same design is preventing it from being fully accessible on the PSP and the Vita.

No blame to Falcom since they could not have foreseen the problems.

Whats sad is it just seems the more we learn about this "2 UMD issue" the more we get screwed over no matter which format we get it in. You either have to pick wanting the extra specials on a physical form, a digital release on Steam without the extras, a seemingly impossible PSN release without reprogramming the entire game, and so on and so forth.

No matter what you guys decide to do when the time comes, know you have my money being thrown your way. I just hope you find a way to please the majority of the small (but loyal) Trails fanbase.

Just as Savin says, I will gladly throw money at you guys to get this game whatever format you release it on, but I pray everyday that we somehow get a physical copy for the psp and a limited edition akin to FC's would be heavenly but the way things are going in the industry now who know.
