Latest Trend: Paying Extra For The 'Real' Ending In Games.

Do you want to know how Final Fantasy XIII-2 really ends? What about Asura's Wrath? Are you displeased with Mass Effect 3's conclusion? Fear not as DLC is on its way, as long as you are willing to pay the extra cash that is.
At least back in the day you would get a congratulatory message before being taken to the main menu. Now games greet you with a 'insert more money here if you want to know how it ends'.

It was only a matter of time.

Just wait until you're paying $60 for the first chapter of a game, then you pay $20 for each successive chapter.

    Ciel no Surge says hi!

[Technically, it's 500 yen or so for the monthly DLC chapters, but the point stands.]

Everything you need to complete the game, and get its real ending should be on the disc. DLC should be limited to multiplayer, extra costumes and level cheats.

The more I learn about the video game industry, the more disgusted I become.
The whole Mass Effect 3 debacle is a good example. Fans were so upset with the ending that they immediately demanded a new conclusion which EA/BIOWARE is more then willing to provide since it means even more money for them. EA/BIOWARE has implemented one of the greatest strategies the world has ever seen and other companies are ready to follow suit.

As far as Mass Effect 3 goes, it does SOUND like it's cause of the fans though. It seems like if there wasn't a lot of backlash over the ending, then they probably wouldn't have thought about making another ending. The outcry just gave them the chance to exploit them. But I haven't played it (or the series for that matter), so I can't really give an honest opinion. It's just the impression I'm getting.

FF13-2 on the other hand (which I DID play and finish), looks like they never had any intention to give you a complete game.

Asura's Wrath I can't speak for at all, seeing as I don't buy garbage with the Capcom label on it anymore. :P
If there were no (developer/publisher) to complain about, we would need to invent it.

Paying for an ending is a horrible idea, but Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Mass Effect 3 are being blown out of proportion, I think.

I don't think XIII-2 is going to have ending DLC. Most likely there will be a XIII-3, and I'm perfectly okay with that. There's definitely enough loose ends for another full game. So, if there ends up being a third game in the series, then that will make XIII-2 no worse than any other game that ends in a cliffhanger (and there are tons of those). However, if it does end up getting a "true end" DLC, instead of a third game, then I will be pissed, and everyone who's currently complaining about it will have every right to complain.

I haven't played Mass Effect 3, but from what I understand the only reason they're doing an ending DLC is because so many people hated the original ending. In other words, they didn't originally plan on doing this. So what this basically says to me is that people who complain about ending DLC are now begging for ending DLC; make up your mind and choose one or the other. Again, I haven't played the game, so I have no idea what the ending is, and my opinion might be different if I had played the game.

This is the first I've heard about Asura's Wrath getting ending DLC. I didn't even know that the game was supposedly incomplete. That's stupid.

So basically I do think that ending DLC is an awful idea and companies shouldn't be able to get away with it, but I also think the buzz around XIII-2 and ME3 is currently being blown out of proportion.

    Well, XIII-3 was trademarked.

Like I said, it will probably get released before Versus XIII.

DNA Sequences 12 and 13 from ACII. I only found out they actually existed (as opposed to the corruption being permanent) when a PC-playing friend asked me how I did on the boat assassination. >:|

(Not an ending but, er, really close to the end?)

At this rate Final Fantasy XV will be released before Versus XIII.
