    Count of Monte Cristo anime

I've been reading The Count of Monte Cristo recently, and I'm really enjoying it so far. (Kinda ashamed it took me this long to finally get around to reading it, but whatever.) Then I recently found out there's an anime based on it called Gankutsuou, which follows the same basic plot, but set around the year 5000. ...with robots.

So, has anyone watched it? It seems to have potential, but it also seems like it could be hilariously awful. So how is it? Is it actually good? So bad it's good? Just downright bad? I'm loving the book, so I'm at least interested in the series.

I only saw the first three episodes of it. It was pretty good until then but I drifted of somewhere since I had to finish my games at the time. I'll take another look at it.
Hope will never die because in our times of despair, hope is the warmth that we all have that we can share. No matter how much life seems to hurt, stand up and never give up. Fight it and come back VICTORIOUS!!!

It's supposed to be excellent, but I haven't gotten around watching it. It's on my backlog though, but I plan on starting it after I actually get my hands on/finish the original novel.

I was pleasantly suprised by it because Gonzo's often chided for being style over very little substance but other than the odd coloring choices they used, it's really quite interesting and certainly my favorite show they've done (well, that I've finished watching anyway -_-). It's one of those series where it starts kind of slow but builds up to a quite remarkable finish.

I think I will end up checking this out when I finish the book. I've heard it's supposed to be pretty good from other sources, and I wanted to get a second opinion here. It's really cheap on Amazon, too.

Gankutsuou (the anime in question) is one of my top 10 favorite anime. Watching the show made me want to read the book (opposite of you, lol). It's both similar and completely different from the book as the anime is from Albert's point of view. They stick to a lot of plot points but they feel fresh from the different view point. . . also the mecha and crazy setting add to that freshness as well! I will tell you now they change the ending of the book, but it works well with the feel of the anime.
