    Steam FAQ

I have taken the liberty to compile and post a miniature steam FAQ since this transition from console to PC could be the first time for some people. Also it can be the first time for some people to be using steam. I listed some basic questions regarding steam. This post will be updated if necessary.

    Update: referenced steamguard

    Where to download steam?

    How to buy from steam?

    What are the Payment options?

What is offline mode and how to set it up?

Follow the instructions listed thoroughly, I cant stress that enough.

    https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...3160-AGCB-2555

One reason why offline mode is not working is because steam did a client update, as stated above.
    Where are saved games located?

Windows 7: Ys: The Oath in Felghana: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\
Ys Origin: (Steam Folder)\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\

Vista: Ys: The Oath in Felghana:C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\
Ys Origin: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\

XP: Ys: The Oath in Felghana: C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\
    Ys Origin: C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\

Thank you Sara for correcting me on the saved game filepaths.

Mac: Do not know. If someone willing to inform me of the filepath, I will add it
    Does steam have region-lock?

    No, steam's service is international.
Will games released by XSEED have region-lock?

Does XSEED add DRM to their games on steam?

No, the only DRM applied to the game will be steams currently existing DRM of requiring you to be online. If you want to play offline, please look at the offline mode section of this FAQ.
Is there extra security available for my account besides login/password?

Yes, steamguard. I recommend using it.

I hope this small FAQ has been of assistance.

I wish that were completely true, but in my present country, I cannot purchase (for example) Skyrim on steam.

Okay, two things. Region-locking is on a per-game basis, I don't THINK Oath or Origin have any locks, but I'm sure you guys will get definite confirmation soon. MOST games however do not.

Second, the save location when the Steam Cloud is enabled is usually as follows:
Ys: The Oath in Felghana: (Steam Folder)\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\
Ys Origin: (Steam Folder)\userdata\(unique user id number)\207320\remote\

The Steam folder is C:\Program Files\Steam\ by default on 32-bit.
    On 64-bit, it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\ by default.
The unique ID number varies for each person but it's always a pretty random number, in any case.

You can move the Steam folder anywhere you want after installation, actually, and it'll still work as long as you update your shortcuts.

It also might be good to have some sort of proper note about Steam's DRM. It really doesn't require anything other than Steam being open, although I do think you need to run the game in online mode at least once for it to work offline. Games on Steam can have further DRM, but Oath and Origin only have Steam's base DRM. I know a lot of people worry about DRM when they hear a game is on Steam.

I am aware region-lock is on per game bases, that is why I asked Tom that question back on page 3 of the thread he announced it on. I should have referenced that post it when i created this thread. Regarding the save game directory, thanks for the information. I couldnt find that information regarding games with steamcloud. I will change my post regarding that. I was planning to add DRM to my post, but fatigue got to me. The link to steam support regarding offline mode already asks to launch the game on step #3.

    Thanks for the corrections.

No region lock, I clarified it above.

Thanks for making this thread, KnightOfAncient! It could prove tremendously helpful for many of the users here, and is an excellent resource. As such, it has been stickied!

And yes, for the moment, we have no intention of region-locking either Ys title. That doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen anyway -- if problems arise that force us to region-lock either game, we will -- but at least for the moment, we don't anticipate any trouble and would be more than happy to offer both games worldwide.

Yeah, Steam is technically DRM, but pretty much the only restrictions are that you have to install via Steam and have it fully updated before you can launch the game, but then you can run it from offline mode, so it's all good.

Be sure to have your steam settings the way you want them too. Click on the steam name on the upper left part of the screen when you have steam active and click on settings. Under the Downloads +cloud tab, Set the speed closest to your connection speed and and location nearest to you. It will help speed up downloads and it may use less bandwidth. Oh, be sure to have Steam Guard active incase anyone tries to hack into your account. Check the other tabs and set it to your liking.

One very important thing to remember. Never leave your credit card info on the servers even if they say it's secure. Not having any info left on them is even better security.

I cannot recall if during the steam installation it asks you to set up your connection settings. Anyway in addition of adding screenshot information to the main post, I was considering but now decided that I am going to add steamguard to the main post when I have the time too.

Good idea. I had to deal with it when I installed windows 8 consumer preview and put steam on it and i forgot what my password was lol.
