I really don't use lures unless the game forces me to b/c I consider them inferior to bait. With bait, you can just zoom in and sit there until the fish you want goes for it. Lures force you to constantly move it around, and there's no zoom feature, making the types of fish you catch more random. This is fine if you're not going for a particular fish, but for those of us going for specific S-ranks right now, bait is far superior.
I do have some strategies for using lures for the tournaments that require you to use them. For the Kanan & Kerikil tournies, the classic gold spinner is awesome. Cast toward the far right of the Kerikil rapids near the mini-waterfall and just move the lure up and down without reeling in. Something will go for it eventually, and sdw has grabbed 23 fish before the tourney's end by doing this. Stick to the southern area of Big Kanan for its tourney & cast toward a fish when you see it, using the same strategy as above.
For Dua Ribu, the red (toy?) goblin spoon XL lure attracts the Wels Catfish, while the red hamstring minnow XL lure attracts the carp in Tidur. When you see a fish go for a lure, stop moving it and pull back on the wiimote when the vibration hits.
This has been mentioned elsewhere but the Bothriolepis can be got on Blue/Green Oriental and Kerikil River. I have not been very successful with it there but others have. That lure seems to only attract Brown Trout, Japanese Salmon and Bothriolepis so statistically you could catch a Bothriolepis quicker. Doesn't seem to work for me and Bothriolepis. This lure also moves up when you pull and moves left when you pull right and moves right when you pull left. This means you can 'sweep' across the grassy marsh while staying at about 90 feet out.
I have never got the hang of Crankbait! I can't think on reverse!! LOL!
It is more difficult to see them go for the bait because you can't zoom in like float fishing. But you will see some fish turn and head for it. Sometimes the vibration is the lure scraping the bottom. There are different kinds of vibration. Try pulling back two times in quick succession to 'fix' the hook. Generally in pulling I actually flick my wrist and keep my arm still so that the wiimote stands up rather than getting pulled towards you.
Thanks. I'll give that quick pulling a try. I haven't noticed vibration differences, I'll have to check that as well.
I tried to watch the fish a little more but even with float fishing I'm not sure what I've got. I'll see several fish near-ish my float but then I get a bite and I have no clue which fish grabbed it. I don't know if I've ever seen a fish actually grab the float.
It's harder in areas where there are a lot of competing fish to see which fish took the bait. Go to a secluded area such as Sepuluh Island and test out just watching the fish you want going up to your bait. There is much less competition and there. Also, don't cast out too far, as you most likely won't see any fish coming up to your bait.
Just noticed something. I use the fishing rod attachment and was testing lures out in the store tank. It wasn't working very well. It was pretty much impossible to keep the lure from sinking to the bottom and once there the best I could do would be bouncing it off the bottom. Using the nunchuk seperately I was able to control it much much better. Anyone notice this if they use the attachment?
Also tried a lure - might have been crank bait- and it said that it sank slowly but it didn't sink at all. Weird.
And sdw, if I'm using a float and a fish I don't want grabs it and I choose not to hook it - it'll take my bait and I'll have to rebait, right? So do I pull the float out of the water if I see the wrong fish hanging around or do something else?

Not much you can do with an unwanted fish. All you can do is hope the attracted fish loses interest and swims away. If the fish you want is attracted to the bait and still is after the unwanted fish disappears, hook it right away before it also swims away!
If I remember correctly, the crankbait is different from the other lures because it SINKS when you reel and floats when you don't. I don't know if this helps you at all though.
