Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom guide - SPOILERS!

Pringles asked me for the Hakuoki guide I was using, so I decided to put it up as a separate thread because of spoilers.

The decisions you make in chapters 1-3 determine which guy's route you wind up in. From there, your choices determine whether you get the good or bad end for that character.

Main source was the Japanese wiki here. (Disclaimer: I'm not fluent in Japanese and haven't finished going through everyone's routes, so a lot of these are a little awkward and won't match the English version exactly, but you should be able to use this to make a good guess and get to the route you want. I'll try to revise this with Aksys's lines as I get further in the game. If anyone has corrections please let me know!)

"Romance +1" -> the character's romance gauge thing increases, you'll know it's happened when you see the flower animation in the middle of the screen.

I'll start with Okita since that was Pringles' request.

    Choices for Okita Souji
    original Japanese

    Chapter 1
    - Find a way to escape
    - Stayed where I was [Romance +1]
    - Try to call someone
    - Go outside to look for your father
    - Look for Okita [Romance +1]
    - Distract the enemy
    - Watching the house
    - Try going to the courtyard

    Chapter 2
    - Investigate the medicine
    - Investigate the Maegawa mansion
    - Scream/raise your voice [Romance +1], maybe another +1 if you've examined the house? Not sure
    - Return to quarters/post
    - Okita
    - I'm worried about Okita
    - Run after/pursue [Romance +1]
    - Evil spirit? (Edit: original is 羅刹のこと, it looks like "Furies" is how Aksys is translating 羅刹 so if there's an option about Furies, choose that.)

    Chapter 3
    - The soldiers
    - Someone neutral
    - "Yes" or "No", either choice is ok
    - Go out
    - Escape from arm
    - Take care of the place/watch the house
    - I'm worried about Okita
    - I hate that/that's unpleasant
    - Quiet down/calm down [Romance +1]

...and then you're in Okita's route, huzzah

I really wanted to want this game, but I just can't get over it being an otome game. Wish they had brought over another more unisex PSP VN. :/

Maybe not on the PSP, but unisex VNs have been brought over - and as a bonus you play as a guy in almost all of them. Not to mention, most games with dating sim elements that get brought over are male-oriented.

We got one or two obscure PC releases but otherwise, this is the first time an otome game has seen a major release in English. And Aksys's risk seems to be paying off so far - Amazon sold out their first stock of LEs.

@Pringles: No problem, hope it helps!

That fair to say, and I see your point. Heck, I'm even happy for guys and gals who are into the idea of an otome game finally getting one. It just stinks that there are so many good unisex VNs that would please both genders waiting in the wings and they chose to really target a specific demographic within the VN playing community rather than the community as a whole.

I really, really, really don't want to go after boys though.

I think you're able to not be involved with anyone, actually. Most otome games do, right?
Also, the game usually raises affection through smart choices. Not choices like "Ask [Name] Out".

I bugged over at the Aksys forums a while back, hoping that were the case, but it seems you're forced to pick someone one way or the other. I'd be interested to know if that weren't the case though.

Oh, you are? Hm. Well, it's like reading a romance novel, really, only you get to decide how it ends. I don't feel like I'm dating any of them at all.
