@Philia: I have found marbled rockfish on the right side of big catch rock before, although it's hard for me to tell what one looks like amidst all the other fish. Sort of looks like a deformed demon stinger. My S-rank one came from the left side of big catch rock, near the rock closest to the top-left. The left has less fish, and it was closer, so I was able to spot it easily. It was my fourth one too. I deserved that luck after the colorfin nightmare.
@sdw4527: Flying fish is smaller than the other small-medium fish you can catch in the tropical ocean. Does the reel have any effect on what fish swim up to the bait? I though it was just for how efficiently you reel in fish. The fish don't see the reel, so I don't think it matters which one you use in terms of attracting certain fish. Although I recognize the fact that the rod/reel combo determines what bait you can use.
I was tearing up the Tropical Ocean earlier. I caught 4 flying fish, 2 sailfish (no S-rank for either), S-bonito, S-hammerhead, S-barracuda, S-yellowfin tuna, S-longfin yellowtail, S-mackerel tuna, S-red emperor, and 3 Xiphactinus (the xiphs were caught across 2 days). Two of the Xiphs came from lure #1, while the third came from #5. Only ones left to S-rank are flying fish, Xiph, & sunfish.

Did you catch most of your flying fish on the west coast? All I seem to be getting is lots of seaweed, John Dorys, and a couple of Coral trout.

All of mine were caught on the west coast, although I haven't tried the south coast yet. I will after I get an S-sunfish. And yeah, you will get a lot of seaweeds and driftwoods (my record is seven in a row) and FRIGGIN JOHN DORYS ARE ALSO GIVING YOU TROUBLE. I've got over 30 of those parasites. They've even invaded the temperate ocean; I just want to catch chicken grunts and japanese whitings, but first I've got to sift through a dozen dorys first. Their evil hath mercy on no one.

LMAO Keaton. I'm looking for Chicken Grunts too. I also need a S rank Sockeye Salmon as well. And I'm f***** done with SMALL ferry ocean fish.
What's your S rank total so far Keaton?

I'm going to try the south coast then. I've caught Coral Trouts over there too so maybe I'll get lucky with the Flying Fish. And the best thing. NO john dorys!

I just hit 150 S-ranks with the ocean sunfish. Now I'm going to try and get an S-flying fish in the south ocean and troll for Xiphactinus for awhile until I decide to go ferrying in the frigid ocean.

Awesome. I'm at 173 before that darn Marbled Rockfish lol. I also tried Pterapsis again and I got it but its a measly D rank. Its my second after a crazy amount of days. :\ I only got it because you think nothing's biting and then I saw a nibble and another nibble (to pull right then) and I was right lol. Its a legendary. Usually they bite like that. I had no luck with that Pink/Blue Spotted lure btw. I'd feel a slight rumble but I could go for a whole day without getting a bite. :\

Yes! Finally caught all the Special fish. I went far west (towards the left side of the Swordfish route) from the island and the first fish I caught was the Flying Fish. It was probably just coincidence, but I'm happy either way, especially because I'm finished with all my presentations at school.
Philia, maybe the reason you didn't get any fish was because only the Pteraspis likes the Pink/Blue Spotted lure? It's just a guess seeing how common the armored catfish and cardinal tetra are in that area.

sdw4572, had you caught ALL of the fish? Pardon me for not remembering if you said you got the award for getting all of them.
Oh the lure isn't the problem. I'm sure it works fine, but the fish pool doesn't reset when you withdraw the lure, so the lame batch of fish can be just swimming around for hours not having a single Pteraspis among of them, which is impossible to tell from the distance too. The only time the fish pool is reset is when you caught something with the lure or a lot of methods with the floater. And then there's hopefully spotting a Pteraspis jumping out of the water lol.

Oh, no. I meant all the "Special" password fish. I still have to catch most of the legendary fish besides the Rolf and Bothriolepis to catch ALL the fish in the game. I actually would rather S-rank fish than stay there and look for legendaries lol.
That's too bad about the Pteraspis. That fish is probably going to take FOREVER to S-rank. I feel sorry for you.
