I've got a S ranked chicken grunt. 1.91 ft. Have only caught 3 total grunts.

Then, I think the game just didn't recognize your S-rank Keaton, unfortunately. If jackandjose got an S-rank 0.08 ft. larger than your A-rank Chicken Grunt, then there seems to be sizeable jump between S and A rank.

On a side note, it looks like I won't be continuing contests anymore. I was trying for my back to back win at Kanan Lake, but when I tried to exit the hotel, the game would hang on the white loading screen. I reset the game several times, but never got past the loading screen. I slept for another day and thankfully, I could leave the hotel. I thought it might have been the end of the game for me.

It's good to know that it's possible to get one, but I'm at 40 something grunts and 36 japanese whitings and no S-rank of either. I hate the temperate ocean. It's bad enough that 1/2 of my catches are driftwood and seaweed, but the other 49% are 5 fish that are caught elsewhere (what sick person decided to thow mackerel AND horse mackerel in there?), leaving the final 1% for the grunts, whitings, and the very rare octopus (which I got an S-rank of early).

Now I'm presented with a new problem. I decided to tally up every S-rank I have using 2 methods: counting them individually in the fish guide by looking at each picture and making sure I saw a golden S, and by counting them collectively in the index. Each method gave me 171 S-ranked fish. Subtracting the 6 special fish I've gotten an S-rank of, that would give me 165 fish. The problem is that the S-rank common award says I have 164 fish. I can think of two reasons for this: the S-rank flapjack octo that didn't give 1000 bonus points, or pond smelt. Smelt are the only fish you never actually see yourself acquiring an S-rank of, so I wonder if the game doesn't include it in the count.

I hate to ask this, but could anyone else verify this? And sdw, that blows really hard about Kanan. I wish you could finish the tourneys, but if you can just sleep an extra day to fix it, wouldn't you like to try again in the future? Although I understand about not wanting to jeopardize your save, especially since you can't copy it to another slot or an SD card.

Anyone know where the Largehead Hairtail is? From the picture on the japanese website, it looks like its on the border line between the Temperate and Frigid Ocean (probably Temperate though). I fished there for a game day and only got Japanese Amberjacks.
    Safir Cave!

I found my Acanthodes just south(maybe 30 ft) of the dead tree
It was in the middle of that small open space. You need to come in from the south so you can see the fish better.

I caught Acanthodes under the dead tree just south, (southeast) of the red windmill after a few days with heroic/lunker/regular rainbow bait

It's OK I guess. I mean the reward for finishing the contests is just changing hairstyles whenever, but then again the rewards for S-ranking and catching one of each fish aren't too great either. I definitely don't want to lose my save for this game especially after all the work I've put into getting the fish (I actually think this is the most time I've ever spent on a single game). Also, where are you catching your Chicken Grunts? I caught a few yesterday in the East temperate ocean, but haven't been able to catch any today. I also S-ranked the Octopus on my third catch so at least I don't have to catch it again. I actually think the Chicken Grunt is even rarer for me than the Octopus.

I have the same catch rate for grunts across the entire temperate ocean. Eventually just decided to park near Tidur for easy bait access. Most days I catch 1-2 grunts, but sometimes I get 3-4 or none at all. I recently caught another 1.84 ft. grunt, but they treated it as an A-rank; I'm at 48 right now. At least I finally got an S-japanese whiting after FORTY-THREE OF THEM. Then I got another one a few fish later.....This game is a jerk. I went right back in the cabin to make sure that first whiting counted, since I didn't receive 1000 bonus points for it either, but I did for the 2nd one, which was .04 ft. bigger than the first.

Sorry to say this Keaton, but I counted 86 S-ranks excluding the 3 I have of special fish which is exactly the same amount it says on the computer.
