i found this hard to find, however, on youtube i saw various trailers of an oldy but a goody of 2 seasons based on ys chronicles 1 and 2,possibly from the 80's
as well as a trailer from a season that i suspect was canceled, regarding mask of the sun.
dalless in my opinion gave the most disturbing appearance...brr :P

It's.... a bit rushed.
Quite a few things are changed as well (even character personalities).

Oh, but it's pretty good if you don't mind listening to an arrange of First Step Towards Wars for an hour =P

Personally, I love it. I think they did a fantastic job of adapting a very "video game-y" plot into 11 episodes of anime, and really expanded upon things in the process. It feels like an old-school Saturday morning cartoon -- not very deep, but exceedingly entertaining. Think Lodoss War, but even more 80s. ;)

You can find the whole series in a single region 1 box-set called "Ys Legacy," which should be fairly easy to locate on eBay -- it's out of print, but far from rare.

I got the Ys Legacy DVD set from RightStuf.com, and it took several weeks for them to get it in stock (but I think they currently still have it in stock, if you want to get it). It's certainly worth the watch. I discussed some interesting differences between the English and Japanese audio tracks in this post (http://xseedgames.com/forums/showthread.php?448-Questions-about-Ys-I-amp-II-Chronicles&p=14507&viewfull=1#post14507). The DVDs' main menus mimic the old Ys computer games' interfaces, and (unfortunately) they even mimic load times when moving between menus or starting the feature.

I haven't watched the adaptation of Ys II because I haven't played the game yet . . . although, based on the little footage I did see of the adaptation, it's completely different from the game. Much more so than the first game's adaptation.

The extras on the DVDs are a little strange. Apparently, there was a Lillia lookallike contest or something around the time of the games' or OVAs' release in Japan, and the girl they picked got to appear in a fairly pointless music video.

Incidentally, since it was an OVA release (single episodes released months apart, 1989-91 for the first and 1992-93 for the second), it's generally referred to as first and second "series," not "seasons." And, what you thought was a canceled adaptation of Ys IV was actually a promo video intended to attract investors to put up funding to make such an adaptation. It didn't work, so that's all there is of an animated Ys IV.

Kind of interesting: the OVAs were originally released on VHS and LaserDisc. The first series, though, only had episodes 3-7 released on LaserDisc, and if I read correctly, they were not available separately, only as a 4-disc box set. Strange release strategy.

P.S. To piggyback on what Tom said, the Japanese voice of Adol is actually also the Japanese voice of Lodoss War's main hero, Parn.

Yeah, the Ys II OAV differs *greatly* from the plot of the game, probably due to the limited time they had (the first game got 7 episodes, whereas the much longer second game got only 4) -- but they went a really, really fascinating direction with it that I quite enjoyed seeing!

I loved the Ys II OVA. The Ys I one was more faithful, but wasn't nearly as interesting. Not to mention Ys II also had so many great song arranges.

Ditto. A lot of people aren't big on deviating from source material, but I personally found the second OVA to be fascinating. The first wasn't really my cup of tea, but it was good enough from a sense that it was Ys. I probably should get around to rewatching this now that I've actually played the games they're based on, but I have so many other things I need to do... :(

You're talking about Rie Sugimoto. She did more than just a fairly pointless music video. (http://vgmdb.net/search?q=Rie+Sugimoto) :)

Just to clarify, that promo was for Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys specifially. Probably explains why Lilia looks like an old woman. :p

Huh, I didn't even know this existed, going to have to check it out now.

Thanks for the heads up!

The first one's better at sticking to the game.
The second one has better animation and had to vary things quite a bit but still ended up nicely.

The Ys IV preview looked amazing though, wish that could have happened.

Huh. She had some CD releases afterward. Hmm. As I recall, I didn't think the song in the music video (which I assume was sung by her) was sung very well. It's possible, though, that I'm thinking only of my reaction to the OVA series' end title, whose vocals I definitely found lacking (a shame, as I liked the song itself).

I . . . assume you're not talking about the Japanese VHS and LaserDisc releases of the OVA series, which would definitely not be readable by a computer or PS3. As for the American release, uh . . . it's a normal DVD. Unless your computer has no DVD-capable drive, it's definitely readable on a computer or PS3 (in fact, I watched the OVA on my PS3). What did you think it was?

Incidentally, as MP83 pointed out, that Ys IV clip was for Dawn of Ys, not Mask of the Sun.

I have the OVAs on DVD myself. ^^; Among the extras were music videos by Rie Sugimoto (the "Miss Lilia" contest winner, who later went on to become a successful singer), as well as a look at Falcom's in-house J.D.K Band.
