View Full Version : Square Enix annouces a Final Fantasy HD remake
too bad it's a remake for Final Fantasy X and not VII like everyone has been asking for. I think it's coming to the PS Vita & PS3 as part of a 10th anniversary event.
Edit: yeah both for PS Vita & PS3

I'ld rather see FFVIII or FFIX remade then VII, it's seriously overrated o.O
I'm not a BIG fan of X, but it's cool....i'ld kill for a remake of IV though, i'ld love to see that story brought back in glorious HD graphics...and no, not in the DS remake's style, but in the style of FFXIII, except that they keep the traditional turn-based battle system ^_^
That aside, i guess this means i get another chance at failing to finish another FF game :p

Bah, I was an un-fan of X. its right when I stopped liking the series.
X is extremely easy to do an HD remake for. Like all the other HD remakes coming to the PS3. They're fully 3D games so all you have to do is increase the texture resolution and toss on a bit of AA and you get some great looking stuff.
I know this because I've already done it on emulators. Though i dunno if the PS3 will be able to sample the textures at 2560x1920 lol

This. FFX and other fully 3D games from last gen can just be ported directly with minor enhancements and they'll sell. PS1 games and older though would need to be completely rebuilt from scratch.
FF7 cost about $40mil back in the day to make, imagine how much a game of its scope would cost to make with the graphics of today.

I might be mistaken, but HD Remakes/Remasters have to be bundled in North America (which is why Peace Walker is a stand alone PS3 game in Japan but part of the MGS Remasters in the west). Curious to see how they work that out, I bet we'll get X-2 along with it. Hopefully when this sells well we get XII as well, it gives them a reason to give us the IZJS version.

They have some other PS2 games they could throw in if necessary. I wonder if they could get away with claiming the International version content is a second game, and offer the option to play the standard version or the International. In that case they wouldn't need to bundle a game with X either, not sure what it's superior version added though.

Heh, people love to jump on the FFVII hate bandwagon, just like anything else that's widely popular. X is a great game and all, loved the battle system, but VII truly deserves a full-fledged HD remake. I'd even prefer VIII over X. The thing is, though, it's much easier to turn a game from last gen into an HD game than one from the PSX era; I'm sure that has a lot to do with it, too.

a remake of a FF would surely cost a lot of money ; but for squarenix it's not a big deal !
however they concentrate on a lot of games at the same time : the kingdom heart serie grew up very fastly few years however FF type 0 ( or agito ) and FFversus 13 were put away for a long time , at the very beggining it was suposed to be released at the same time of ff13 and finnaly they had too the dissidia project :(
indeed I upgraded to Duck Fat Delight's title :)

This.
FFX was a great game, and even though its graphics aren't PS3-quality, its one of the better games on PS2 and its already fully voiced. I am happy about the remake, but V, VI, VII, VIII or IX would have been better because they are much older.
Oh, but I don't agree with X-2...I thought that game was kind of "unnecessary", though I do admit it did have a few good things.
I personally don't like VIII very much (well, at least in comparison with the other FF games), but, as I said, it would be a better choice than X. But I am glad they chose X over XII. I really didn't like XII, beating the final boss without touching your controller is pretty sad.
Also, I agree that the hate against VII is pretty sad. No, I'm not saying is the best RPG in the world or something like that, and I won't even say is the best Final Fantasy, but it was a really good game, and Crisis Core also (though the movie...well, at least the fight against Sephiroth was good). Oh, and you might love or hate Sephiroth, but One Winged Angel is Awesome.

A little disappointed, but not at all surprising. FFX is Japan's favorite Final Fantasy. My little brother will be pleased, though.
Would've preferred a VI, VIII, or XII HD remake, but I understand this will never happen with the current SE.

I don't know why they're calling this a remake. It's obvious that it will be an HD port like all the other recent ones, and this is why they chose X over the earlier games. I hope X-2 comes bundled with it as well (both international editions); that game has one of the best battle systems in the series.

I only played the DS remake of FFIV and i was refering to a remake in the style of graphics like that of FFXIII, but polygon 3D graphics like the DS version.

Why exactly is that? so they can retail for $39.99?
I can imagine that they could release it for a lower price point without bundling it, no?
Chaosblade
09-14-2011, 05:20 PM
SCEA is just picky sometimes. It's sort of like how they refused PS1 ports on PSP early on in the systems life, even though Japan and Europe got them. I guess they just don't want to "water down" their platforms with a bunch of old ports. In the case of remasters they can't really deny them entirely, but by forcing all of them to be collections of sorts, it makes them look like good value games instead of just a bunch of individual rehashes.
That's just my take on it though.

Its because Sony doesn't want to release PS3 games below a certain price point at retail, sort of a "It cheapens the brand" type of mentality.

However, like I've said before on here, I would be completely against a remake. Square's handling of the universe in the past couple of years has done nothing but make me question if they really even remember VII that well. I'll stick to my PS1/PSN versions and remember the good ol' days of '97.

I can agree with this. I shudder to think of an FF7 remake where all the characters look like they do in Advent Children or Crisis Core. *shudder* I liked Nomura's art a lot better when he had technical limitations holding him back. As soon as technology caught up with his artistic visions, we began to see just how... erm... "unique" those visions were. ;)

That's Final Fantasy Versus 13, silly. In fact, that's probably what the delay is all about. Nomura MUST decorate the scenery with belts and zippers too, much to the dismay of the programming and visual staff.
Seriously though, I kind of doubt this FFX HD will be an outright remake. I have it in mind that it's more like the Beyond Good & Evil HD version where the graphics are spiced up to look fantabulous in high definition.

I've been noticing "remake" and "remaster" being thrown around interchangeably, and I think you're right - it's mainly just getting a face lift.
I was hoping they'd hop on the HD remaster bandwagon with FFXII, but I forgot this year is FFX's ten-year anniversary, so I guess that makes more sense. Either way I'm excited. :D

I always think of Lulu's belt skirt when I hear anyone talking about the overload of belts on some of the character designs. Next to her other character seem to have an acceptable amount, even if they were more than a few than needed. She must have strong legs to be able to run around in that skirt.

I'd rather have VII than X personally. X is one of my least favourite in the series, but I can't really put my finger on just why that is. I just could never really get into it. Oh, so the character actually gets pregnant in the game? That makes a lot more sense. I'd rather gotten the impression that reyvard had seen someone on the Internet post something like, "I'll bet if she ever got pregnant, her stomach would stay flat" . . . which would just be one bizarre, maybe even messed-up, thing to say about someone.
I vaguely thought, "Maybe she gets pregnant in the game," but I dismissed that idea because surely I'd have heard about that in the past ten years. . . . I guess that one was a better kept secret from me than Aeris' *ahem* voyage to the Undiscovered Country.

Wow. I'm really surprised I never heard about any of this. Outside of alien/demon impregnations, isn't pregnancy very rare in video gaming? Maybe I just did a ridiculously good job avoiding game hype.

P.S. Wait a minute, the father is WAKKA? I seem to remember that guy being . . . well, not the kind of guy I'd think would be well suited to rearing a child.

It is pretty rare in RPGs. For one thing, most JRPGs tend to focus on teens or younger so yeeeeah, that kind of limits what all you can do. WRPGs certainly reach the age where characters could be pregnant, but tend to avoid it altogether. Or in the case of a certain popular game, make the character incapable of dealing with such issues. :P
And yeah, Wakka strikes me as a terrible father figure. Unless you're into Blitzball or something. Heh. I figure between Lulu and Wakka, that kid would have one heck of a Dr. Phil episode.
