EDIT: DQX re-announced for the Wii and Wii U with some apparent 3DS Streetpass connectivity. Wii U will feature improved graphics, and both versions will be online. Here's a few screencaps I took of the trailer on my laptop...

Watched the trailer, thought it looked awesome.
Then they announce that.......
It's online.
An online RPG.
On the Wii.
This is going to be a cluster BACONBACONBACONBACON of immense proportions.

I'm excited, but I'm trying not to get too excited. Hopefully the online is decent enough (was Monster Hunter any good in this regard?), because even though I liked IX, I'd rather not play another DQ like it all by lonesome again. ='(

It's coming out for Wii U too, no need to flip out. Sounds like there is going to be some sort of 3DS connectivity as well. Gameplay stuff looked great, really looking forward to this.

For the love of god, is it impossible to make a single player RPG without "social media", "online play" or any of that sort of crap anymore?
Not every BACONBACONBACONBACONing game needs multiplayer!

There's no harm in having the option there for those who would like to play with friends.

Definitely. That's something I always worry about as I've never really gotten into MMOs before, but would really like to try and play along with others. I figured they were going to take IX and expand on its online and connectivity for X and it's looking like that's indeed where they're going, hopefully it all works out in the end.

Its gonna be on Wii and Wii U, and it sounds like you can transfer your characters or something along those lines to your 3DS for Streetpass stuff.
Honestly though, if the offline is just like 9, with no real party members, just personality-less lumps that you make, I'm not all that interested in it.
Boy_Tomo_Chan
09-05-2011, 06:20 AM
That's something I felt was missing from 9 as well. I really enjoy the party talk a lot, made me feel I was right there with them. I think they should have one non-custom guy in your party at all times or something.

With AI bots. There was no mention that this game has an "offline" mode at all. In fact, to save their progress with the AI bots, they had to log out of the servers.

Kotaku is saying there will be a subscription fee.
http://kotaku.com/5837325/dragon-que...bscription-fee
So much for the offline play.
And the Wii and Wii-U versions won't be released concurrently. So I guess they are expecting people to buy it twice?

I would hold out for more info before jumping to conclusions. They haven't said anything about paying for playing solely offline, and DQX's Wii U release may be TBA because the Wii U's release itself is TBA, so they might still have a chance to come out simultaneously. And if I recall correctly there are some other MMO type games in Japan (like Monster Hunter) that charge subscription fees, while the same games released in the US do not. At this point, who knows how everything will work? I think it's going to be a while before we find out every little detail, I'm sure they'll flesh all of it out in due time.

They haven't said there's an offline mode. As I mentioned before, you're online even when you're playing just by yourself with the AI bots.
As for the dates, it's obvious the Wii U version comes later. They aren't going to release them simultaneously unless they want one version to not sell at all.

"14:30: The next theme is things that may relieve those worried about online games. You'll be able to logout easily, for instance. You won't have to play with others -- the game can be cleared 100% on your own, using NPC characters. The commands will be familiar."
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/09/05/dq_press_conference/
Regarding the dates, I don't personally think anything is obvious at this point. I think the Wii version is there because of the original promise they made to bring it to the system, while the Wii U version is there for people looking for a graphical upgrade which is smartly not a slap-in-the-face to Wii-only owners. I believe it's perfectly plausible that they may come out around the same time. Guess we'll have to see!

Okay. Why did you neglect what I said about the game being online when they were supposedly demoing the game with AI party members? That quote doesn't say the game can be played offline at all. It just says you can play by yourself, which is what SE was demoing and we saw they were in fact online.

I took where it mentioned that you can "logout easily" followed by "you don't have to play with others [etc. etc.]" to mean that you can logout and play by yourself offline with the AI, similar to DQIX. I wasn't intending to be rude, that's just how I interpreted the quote.

I guess we'll have to see if Anoop was right, since what they did demo didn't exactly showcase offline play.
People need to stop overreacting to the online. It's not PSO or FFXI, or even an mmo. It's closer to Diablo II than anything, as far as the online goes.
You can solo the whole game, or play with friends. Dragon Quest has always had a nearly perfect scenerio and synopsis for this, IX only helped to reinforce that fact.
I'm going to love the BACONBACONBACONBACON out of X, just like every other Dragon Quest.

Huh. I wonder what the odds are that this is a Wii U exclusive in the west. I have zero interest in that console so perhaps it best I don't follow this title at all. I'm already highly skeptical of it, if I'm not going to be able to play the game I shouldn't bother to get worked up over it. Here's to hoping they bring the DQ Collection over so that I once again have access to all of the real DQ games.

I'm not sure whether i like the sound of DQX or not so far.
I haven't played a whole lot of DQ games, but VIII was terrific, IV was alright, Swords was also alright and IX (so far) is great. My only problem with IX is that there is not "true" online play, more like what i would consider "LAN". If DQX is more an MMO then IX, then i'm skeptical as to whether i would be interested, if there is a subscription fee, forget it. However, if it was like DQIX, but with expanded features (i.e true online play) then count me in.
It doesn't look that way though and also, this game should be a Wii-U exclusive, not that i'm saying it's going to be the best console ever, but the Wii version of DQX might "die out" sooner then the Wii-U version once that one starts to take over.

I bet by "first few hours" they mean a tutorial that will be offline regardless. The game is a straight MMO, not a halfway/optional thing and that's why it requires you to be online.
Sounds pretty lame to me, but that's just because I don't like MMOs or subscription fees. Doubt it will have a fee outside Japan, but it's still an MMO and I don't need a game that's a "timekiller" like that.

Well there goes that, not good news indeed... The game looks great, but having to be connected at all times to play always scares the crap out of me, especially on consoles. Still looking forward to it as I could see myself really getting into an online DQ as my first MMO type experience, but that definitely does put a damper on things. Hopefully the Wii U has a good online setup, I've personally never used the Wii's.

By the way, why is there no "Human race" picture? You can make human characters... right? Not that I have anything against furries and whatnot, but humans always look the best to me. PSU's various clothing & race combos all pretty much sucked save for the humans. As a fan of playing dress up with characters I must know!

Hey I didn't mean that in any negative way. As of right now DQI-IX are /real/ DQ games. I'd like to have the complete series once again which is why I hold out hope they'll localize the collection. They're bringing over the Rocket Slime, Monsters, Fortune Street, etc spinoffs. Which I'm okay with that as I've played some of them and plan to pick up Monsters 2. I'm just saying it would suck if they left the real deal behind in favor of the countless spinoffs. :)

Anyways, if they're gonna do multiplayer, I'd rather they do something like Secret of Mana. Other players can control the other characters, but the characters still have an identity to them. This way whether you're playing multiplayer or single player, you still get the full experience.
By this logic you must also dislike Dragon Quest III. You monster.
But seriously, until the remakes virtually all the DQ games had zero characterization for main characters up until VIII...and that's it. IV-VII had some really lazy character development for the party. Consequently I don't really see this as being too much of an issue here, assuming the single player mode is 100% doable without going online.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the exact opposite confirmed? You're required to be online in a persistent world, but you're not required to interact with others to complete the main story. That's what I've seen at least.

The FAQ apparently says that only the first few hours can be played but others translated it the opposite. If it's the former I can scratch this off my list. If it's the latter, I'll go for it. Given what Square's been doing though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first...which wouldn't hurt my feelings because I wouldn't be inspired to buy it.

Square Enix typed up a FAQ for Dragon Quest X: Waking of the Five Tribes that covers everything from the game’s title to how to connect your Wii online. The most interesting tidbit is a question that asks is it possible to play Dragon Quest X without connecting to the Internet.
You can play a few hours of the game’s opening offline, the FAQ answered, but afterwards players are required to connect to the Internet. Square Enix also says the game will have a usage fee, but the price has not been determined.
I short line from the support desk. Or something said by the creator of the series live.

Also again I don't care if I have to play online or not. I am always online, whether playing on my PC, xbox, ps3 or Wii. The only time I disable wireless is on my PSP or 3DS when I'm not playing online.
