View Full Version : What about manga?

Anime this, anime that, but what about the source material? Most anime are based on manga. Let's start talking about manga as well.

as you said most anime are based on manga but I've never seen the contrary , there are also those who are based on a game but I never really like them even
for fairy tail personnally I'm fond of the manga but I don't really follow the anime or only to see where they are
so generally I prefer the manga
what about you ?

Well, the Digimon manga was adapted from the show. As was a large chunk of Gundam manga. Other than that, I can't think of another one off the top of my head.
I flip-flop between favoring manga and anime. Lately I've been coming down on the side of anime as I have been less than impressed with the editing and in some cases the translation of a lot of the manga

The Neon Genesis Evangelion manga was based on the anime, for one example. That is a weird example, though, since despite the fact that the manga is based on the anime, the manga was actually released first out of the two.
I dabble in manga occasionally, but generally prefer anime.

Everyone should be reading Berserk. Everyone.
...And maybe High School of the Dead, too.

Manga have definitely become less and less popular. It's so much easier to simply catch an episode of your favourite anime on a streaming site (hulu, crunchyroll) and be done with it.
As far as I'm concerned, there is something magical about reading manga. It's something you don't get when you're simply watching a show. Monkey High, Nodame Cantabile and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei are some of the manga I've read.

Anime is more popular than Manga outside of Japan. But I prefer manga, it's great and the're are some thinks that sometimes the anime don't show and sometimes the plot in the anime isn't the same as the manga.

I read manga much more than I watch anime, mostly shounen and seinen stuff. There are a lot of good manga with no anime adaption. Action and Comedy are my favorite genres though I also read slice of life (like yotsuba) and romance stuff.
Some of my favorites are Mahoraba (not Mahoromatic or Maburaho), Blame!, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Kyou Kara Ore Wa!
Everyone should be reading Berserk. Everyone.
...And maybe High School of the Dead, too.
Berserk is not suitable for all audiences. It is very violent, gory, and has quite a few instances of random monsters raping women. A lot of people don't want to read that kind of thing. Highschool of the dead is tame by comparison.

Well if the mangaka keeps taking breaks so he can play videogames then probably not until he dies. I like Berserk but I'm not a huge fan or anything, I stopped after 27 volumes I believe. Him and yoshihiro togashi (hunter x hunter) are really bad about the hiatus cause they feel like it thing

Heh... well, when I said that everyone should be reading it I didn't exactly mean it literally; however, it is my all time favorite manga so that was more or less my way of expressing how much I like it. And I agree, Berserk is definitely not for the faint of heart.
By the way, props on mentioning Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

which parts of Jojo do you like the best? I like part 3 best followed by part 2 and 5. The only one I think is kinda lame is part 4.
Yeah we really need some manga love on this board. The Excel Saga manga is really worth checking out (love Elgala). I'd say Excel Saga, Yotsuba&, Fullmetal Alchemist, Black Cat, and Lucky Star are my top 5 favourites.

I don't read manga nearly as much as I watch anime, but I do occasionally read it when I find the manga alternatives to be the better choice.
Been trying to catch up with One Piece lately. Currently on Chapter 258 out of about... 630 or something?

The problem with anime shows is that most of them don't have an ending episode. That's because the manga doesn't end. Not everybody is lucky enough to get 1000+ episodes as is the case with Bleach and Naruto to name a few. All of this means that you're going to end up with something like Saki (an anime about a bunch of girls playing mahjong that greatly enjoyed) that doesn't really have an ending. And then you're off reading the manga which is what you should have done in the first place. Admittedly, it is easier to just catch an episode or two online and then be done with it. Reading manga takes time an dedication.

Well, yeah, you're always gonna get shows that shows that don't exactly follow the source material perfectly because that's not really possible most of the time. I haven't watched those shows, and I don't care to, but generally shows do have endings; anime original end or not.
And it's not always as simple as Manga -> Anime. Not every anime is based off a manga. A big source studios are pulling from nowadays are light novels (most which aren't translated). Sometimes you get VN adaptations, as well. And then there are shows that are original works themselves, and often have mangas based off them.
Half the shows I watch aren't even manga adaptations.
Adrian-kun
07-07-2011, 10:11 AM
You're right. It's not always manga. There are also lights novels or visual novels. As originality goes, I have rarely seen an anime that's based on nothing at all. Frankly, Black Rock Shooter and Fractale are the only original anime I know of.
What I'm trying to say is that the original material is always going to be much better especially since anime are adaptations. The book will always be better than the movie.

@Adrian-kun: Or take Spice and Wolf for an example. That one is going to end soon.
Yeah I hate the Big 3 at its most. They have the worst fanbase and the story is ridiculous. I mainly hate mainstream but Naruto is the worst.
@Cloud: There are always Anime that are better than Manga. Take the series of your Picture for example, K-ON! :D
As it goes for Endings after all, Evangelion had the weirdest ending if you ask me. And I am not even talking of the Anime ending here.

Most of the manga I've read or still read don't have an anime adaption anyway. I've noticed lots of Seinen stuff in particular seems to stay isolated to manga only.
some cool mangas with no anime:

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=10866

Gurren Lagann, G Gundam (and several other Gundam series), Macross, Code Geass, Angel Beats!, Eden of the East, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Aim for the Top 1/2, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Star Driver, etc.
A lot of these shows eventually get manga adaptions a little bit afterwards, but they're all mostly based off the shows themselves, or side stories to accompany them.
What I'm trying to say is that the original material is always going to be much better especially since anime are adaptations. The book will always be better than the movie.
Yeah, but not everyone really has access to the source material. I'd LOVE to be able to read all of the Baccano! light novels. But I can't because they're not translated, so I don't mind the already fantastic anime adaptation that probably won't get a season season.

Yeah the exceptions are usually few and far between of when the anime is actually better than the manga, but that's pretty much the same of all television shows/movies based off of books.
As for long series, tell me about it :( It's not One Piece, but Detective Conan in my case. It's up in the 780ish I believe chapterwise and episodewise about 623 (at least in Japan, wish I could understand the language). It's a series I'd love to get into more, but it just seems so overwhelming. It also sucks that they stopped with the localization for the anime series. It was what got me into reading the manga in the first place. Guess it wasn't mainstream enough to justify 600+ episodes of a still ongoing series. I'm honestly starting to wonder if it'll ever end.

I think I'm the only person in the world that hates Yotsuba&!. Little hyperactive girl with severe ADD make me want to punch her. I have a friend that loves the manga and has tried to convince me that her behaviour is typical and that it's endearing. The hell it is.
Anyway, I used to read a lot of titles but lately, I've scaled back to just Fairy Tail and Noblesse. Those are the primary two. I also read some Soul Eater, Rosario+Vampire II, and some other titles I can't recall.
I randomly check up on Naruto and Vampire Knight now and then too.

Also I'd recommend Dr. Rurru for anyone who wants a comedy/ecchi series that's actually good. It's only 3 volumes long though cause it got canceled. Thus it joins the ranks of other good canceled mangas like Mx0, Ann Cassandra, etc...

The movie and the game are based on the original manga/comic. However, since the author lives in Canada I think it's better to call it a comic to avoid confusion about country of origin.

The last manga I remember finishing was Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, and that was a while ago. Got really confusing and convoluted near the end, but I still loved it. I did appreciate how the manga got a lot darker in the second half of the series, though. Tokyo arc will always remain my favorite.
More recently, I finished Volume 12 of the Eva manga and will probably have to wait a really long time for the next volume to come out here, considering that Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is probably the laziest manga artist ever.
I'm looking at my shelf and being constantly reminded that I should read through all of Death Note since I have the entire series.

So it's been a while since I've read some manga, so I thought I'd read some, namely Kimi no Iru Machi and Yotsuba.
Kimi no Iru Machi reminded me why I'm not a fan of romantic dramas. They all start off fine, but then just drag on and become detestable. Nobody likes the person who likes them, new uninteresting characters are introduced, pushing aside the interesting ones from the beginning, the main relationship never happens, or is complicated with useless things, and people start acting stupid. Seriously, who can actually enjoy reading this? After reading the first 50 chapters and skimming the next 100, I'm glad I dropped this, as it seems to get WAY worse.
Yotsuba, on the other hand, is complete gold, and is probably the best slice of life comedy manga I've read. It might even be better than Calvin and Hobbes (a comic I find similar to Yotsuba). I was also pleasantly surprised to find we're not that far behind in releases (only 1 volume behind), until I found out this manga is a monthly release, which really sucks, because this manga is absolutely fantastic. I'm tempted to buy the volumes now, but I'm hesitant in investing in an ongoing manga, so I'm undecided atm.
Anyways, if anyone wants to read a good manga, read NG Life. Highly underrated, and very funny and emotional. I've ordered the final volumes from Rightstuf, so hopefully they'll be here soon. Really glad Tokyopop was able to push this out before going under.

Ok, ordered Code Name Sailor V Volume 1 & 2 as well as Sailor Moon Volume 1 & 2, gonna order volumes 3, 4, 5, 6 and maybe the rest next month or something ^______^
Enjoy! My vol 3 came in a while ago, but I haven't had a chance to read it... Manga-wise I'm hooked on xxxHOLiC and only need to read a couple more (and get my last volume in) before I'm done with the whole thing. LOVE it!! I sit there and read until I need to fall asleep (I like reading before bed.)

Demonata books, sorry I do not know what you are talking about....You mean the teen seven novels?
Only to be sure, I'm at tome 10, so no spoil please.
Darren Shan is too underrated. But since it's a manga series I like very very much, if not my favorite and it'S SO HARD to get in French, I do not want to lend them and share the love that way :(

Bot bumped this, so why not revive it? Currently I've been reading Code Geass: Queen. I own both Queen and Knight :p Honestly, the covers really mislead them! For Queen being the "version for boys" it's not even ecchi! No more than the anime itself. As one of the authors breaking the 4th wall mentioned, they can't go out of character for the anthology. So yeah, these are just fun little gags. A lot of it I can see as more girly than for guys, really :p But really, anyone can enjoy both Knight and Queen. Well, guess I can't speak for Knight yet, haven't got to them yet. But yeah Queen at least, is one big "don't judge a book by its cover".

I highly recommend this series: http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=72810
It's by the author of Elfen Lied but so far the content (nudity , violence, etc) is not as exteme and it has an intelligent main character (unlike elfen lied). I'm happy the author has finally gone back to doing sci fi/harem stuff.

So it looks like I may want to look into this; I was avoiding it for the fear that it would be more fanservice than I care for in that direction. Well... and assuming it didn't have a volume skyrocket up in price already...

So vol 2-5 are still available on both Amazon and Rightstuf. Vol 1 is gone on Rightstuf, but some sellers on Amazon still have it up for regular price. With ALL Bandai ends to stop printing in two months, I'd pick them up ASAP >_>

I started reading Chrono Crusade after looking through my manga collection and deciding what to keep. It's definitely one of my favorite manga series. Stopped reading manga years ago, and now all it's doing is taking up space. So I decided I'm going to get rid of it all, with the exception of three series which I'll keep: Chrono Crusade, Fullmetal Alchemist, and, of course, Rurouni Kenshin (my all-time favorite manga series).

Yeah, it's easily one of my favorite manga series. One thing I love about it, aside from it being generally awesome, is how every volume, unlike every other manga series I've ever read, doesn't just stop after X amount of chapters. Volumes 1-6 all end at logical breaks in the story, and 7/8 are basically a two-part grand finale.

Some manga got cliffhanger at the end. Chrno Crusade and Darren Shan are part of those. I'd also add Suikoden III.

Just finished reading Mazinger Z. Considering it was the first-ever super robot series, it was better than I expected. Really solid first three volumes, but half of volumes 4 and 5 were mostly just unexplained filler that really detracted from the quality.

I just caught all the way up on Liar Game. I only started reading it recently but got totally hooked on it. The story has a lot of cool twists and is very psychological and clever. The artwork is lackluster but I stopped caring about that pretty quickly with how awesome everything else was. If you're looking for something new to try give it a shot.

Just read the first volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse today. Different take, I love alternate stuff with characters I'm familiar with. Doesn't feel like much happened in vol 1, little dialogue, so it was a very quick read.

Read Gate 7 the other day (finally). I swear it's the one series that I always forget what happens since the last one got released :p With the releases pretty slow (since the chapters are done monthly, not weekly) I have to sit there and try to remember what was going on last volume :p Not like back in the day when I only owned a few manga volumes and would re-read them over and over and over (Chobits and Angelic Layer, mostly) until the new volumes came out. Now, my backlog is just so big I don't have time for that :p

One Piece was one of the first mangas I read, and I would always re-read every volume when the new one came out. Then it wasn't worth it to do that once there were 5+ books out. I did the same thing for a couple other series, too. Eventually I stopped re-reading all of them and only read the newest book.

When I do redead long series (like D.gray-man for example) I'll reread only the key parts. I can'T wait for Tales of Legendia vol. 4 and D.gray-man vol. 23 to get out!!!

Just read through the quick Pokemon Black and White vol 8 "mini-volume". It was actually pretty good! Sometimes the Adventure manga series can have deeper themes in them.
Read through Cowa! It was pretty good. I loved the characters and the story was cute. Also picked up Ode to Kirihito. It was cheap, looks interesting, and was done by Tezuka. Here's hoping its good

Recently started Gakuen Alice. So far I really like it and I'm up to vol. 11 now. Actually I started reading it long ago and I didn't liked it with the first few pages ( looked too childish for me) and I recently grabbed it randomly and I fell in love with its cuteness. Well it is supposed to be cute but all I see is that amazing and opressing controlling school-society where children are stripped from their rights, childhood, innocence and their family and friends after being put in a grade-hierarchy system without any help. Some kids come to this academy by force at the age of like 3 years old......It is kind of severe; I didn't expected that in a shoujo manga aimed at little girls. Anyway, my favorite character is Luca, along with Yoichi and last in my top 3 is Natsume ( well he is like one of the main characters....). I'm probably going to pick them up sooner or later.

Attack on Titan
Jesus Christ this comic is intense. Are you reading it? Why aren't you reading it???
The terribly grotesque nature of the story and plot features what is nothing short of psychologically frail human beings that make the plot and characters of Neon-Gen: Evangelion look like a bunch of pussies. The action is really fantastic (involving interesting developments, limbs flying, people getting crushed, or sometimes just sheer brutality -- one chapter barely relied on any words and just showed a good damn fight). But amongst all that and all the "shitty things" that happen to the humans in the story, we get really strong characters whether they're main or secondary figures to the plot. Every so often the story dips into other key players in the story to help tell the additional parts going on apart of the main three characters (sometimes going a few chapters without them even being really involved).
The art style is wonderful, although it can sometimes look a bit strange and awkward, but it still jives and works well within the story. The Titans themselves can often be anywhere from physically fit to...incredibly misshapen and anatomically incorrect. But this can add to the overall frightening character of the titans, especially with respect to when some stretch their elongated arms or open their larger-than-normal mouths to pursue human flesh in a strange act of "giant-people" engaging in what is basically cannibalism. Quite often the horror is so up front and personal with characters you may have gotten to know to some extent and really feel their pain. The story has no problem putting its characters through hell and making them work for any *hope* at a single victory, let alone a happy ending.
I'm writing now because I'm sadly almost done what's available (iirc, it's 11 volumes so far). I highly recommend it if you're bored with the slice-of-life or comedy types (because you'll find little of that genre here), some good action, and a sense of macabre and fantasy. It's well plotted, and the foreshadowing almost wants you to give it a second read. I'm also writing in reaction to three bizarre and almost frightening plot twists that left me all [I]"O"-faced.
If you don't like it you can come and find me and slap me. There is a great atmosphere in this story, and I don't really feel like I'm reading the "typical" manga at all. Next time you wonder "what's a good manga should I read?" I gave you a juicy option here.
