I beat Ys I last night, and holy crap Dark Fact was annoying. He really wasn't too difficult, but it still took me a bunch of tries. Every time I fought him I always managed to get his health down to just one or two more hits to kill him, and that's when I got stuck in a corner where he slaughtered me. Damn those last couple of hits.

Now, onward to Ys II! Why have I never played an Ys game before? This game was awesome!

The final boss theme was enough to help me get through that fight since it's one of my favorite tracks from the game. I just hope I won't rage too much if I do replay it and try it on Nightmare difficulty.

That boss drove me insane and will likely be one of the main reasons I will likely never beat Ys I again. I'm not a huge Ys I fan, but Ys II is a much, much better game. Enjoy!

Yep, things only get better from there. Ys II is amazing, and then Felghana and Seven (and Napishtim) await! (:

I retried the boss so many times that I decided it'd be easier and take less time (lol) to go on easy difficulty. One-shot him there. On the basis of the difference there, I figure nightmare final boss must be impossible. Many people lament about how easy bosses are these days, but this last boss isn't one of those!

I'm glad to hear things only get better. I was skeptical about the bump system when I first started playing, and it took a bit to get used to it, but once I got the hang of it the game became incredibly enjoyable.

I might replay Ys I before starting Ys II and follow the walkthrough in the instruction manual step by step. When I finished the game I was missing some items, and though I know whatever I missed wasn't necessary, it would be nice to have everything. Plus it would only take about another five hours to play through again now that I know what to do (took me about seven the first time).

Yeah, well, my first experience with ol' Dark fact was in the DS version of Ys I. Let's just say he was a pushover.

That experience didn't prepare me at all for fighting Dark Fact at his normal freakishly-difficult level of, well, difficulty! Needless to say, the playing field in the DS version was much larger, to accomodate the stylus-based control scheme, I think. I could dodge his shots. It was a sad, saaad day for Dark Fact.

Anyways, I'm not looking forward to certain bosses in Ys II, but that's a worry for later! I have Trails in the Sky to deal with for now! Hooray for TitS!

My first time fighting him was : OMGWTF why did the best sword in the game didn't do any damage to him!!

After repeating it for 20 times. In the next day, re-climb from Floor 1 of Darm Tower while reading all of the text (I'm playing Japan version, btw), then tried to use Silver. And it works!? O RLY?

I was already finished YS II at that time, and in the II, the silver sword is clearly called Cleria... and... that was a bad experience...

I watched some videos on Youtube of Ys I bosses in an earlier version of the game (I think it was the first version of Books I + II that came out in the US), and some of the bosses actually look easier than they are in this version. Vagullion seemed to materialize far more frequently, and have less bats to attack with, than in this one and Dark Fact looked like he had less health.

I wouldn't be too worried. Ys I's bosses are WAY tougher. If you've beaten Ys I Chronicles, you should have no trouble at all with Ys II Chronicles!

B-b-but... ZAVA, DAMMIT! I hated her enough in Ys II DS. After that experience with Dark Fact, and some pretty painful Ys II fights, I'm guessing it will be a pain. But, I'll see. after I finish Trails! <3

Zava is definitely the toughest boss in Ys II Chronicles, but she's still got nothing on Vagullion from Ys I. (I actually had very little trouble with Dark Fact, personally, but I'd still say he's more challenging than Zava.)

I guess I got really unlucky with the whole floor thing because I thought Vagullion was substantially easier than Dark Fact (though easy mode Dark Fact was probably easier than Vagullion, who seemed just about as tough there to me). Either boss is much more difficult than most out there.

Zava drove me nuts, I had far more difficulty with her than Vagullion or Dark Fact.

I found Zava to be the hardest boss out of both games, by far. I think it took me 30+ retries to beat that. The rest of the game was a lot easier from there.

I'm pretty sure a platform falls for every hit you land, so if you get five hits in a row five platforms will fall, etc.

Wyrd, I did decipher the Ys books for gemma's blue amulet and the silver equipment. I just can't suceed :O

Chelli => Depending on how you hit, you may lose up to 4 -_- I lost four in one shot during one of my attempt, I killed myself, it was imposible to beat with that much out in one hit!

I'll try again for the 25th time. I'll go outside, maybe the sun will help me ><

Don't give up! It took me a bunch of tries to finally beat him. Luckily the battle is really fast, so it's not like you have to repeat a 20-minute battle every time. I just kept fighting him and eventually I finally beat him.

Dark Fact is a really weird boss for me. I've never died to him on my first attempts, but I can never seem to beat him again afterwards.

He's just incredibly random because of the platforms. Without those factored in, he's a piece of cake. With? Quite frustrating...

Ironically it's not the platforms my probelm, but the piou piouz >< I'll cnocentrate on dodging those and the falling platform will come down randomly =/
48th try -_- I really feel noob

52..I'am about to give up.................the countup

ArRRRR.. one hit and he was dead...the fireballs got me once again

Wyrdwad
07-15-2011, 07:26 PM
The trick is to completely ignore the fireballs. Just pretend they're not there, and focus on hitting the boss. The fireballs alone won't be enough to kill you if you're quick enough at taking him down, whereas if you try to DODGE the fireballs, you'll almost CERTAINLY take too long and get killed.

Also, make sure you're level 10. If you're level 9, he's pretty much impossible.

That was my first ''Strategy'' and yes the fireballs did kill me a LOT of times :D And Yeah I'm level 10 since a long time way before entering that tower ;)

FYI, the easy version is much, much easier (though it's one of the few fights that I found was easier than normal). It actually took me less time to go through the entire game than beat the final boss on normal (I'm guessing, I gave up after getting killed 20 times or so). :P I really wouldn't want to see how the final boss is on nightmare.

bumpy,
i guess it was normal or easy mode, but beating mister dark fact was challenging i admit.
reaching zava- in progress, im curious of locking horns with her :)

oh and possible spoiler, but i guess maybe wiki or falcom will explain the situation: [ read at yer own risk :P]
from what i saw on youtube, at ys origin, when you get to face both old and new rivals on yunica tovah, hugo fact or "the claw", you get to face dalless, zava, nystilgar and many more, after you beat them they turn to ash [charming] with yuni and hugo, with the claw on other hand, situation wee different and daless gets impladed by some bearded fellow [my understanding it was 1 of the 6 priests, id reckon darm fact]
question is, how the heck daless [now cloaked] zava etc got revived?
amusingly, adol vanquishes them for good..go figure heroes hundreds years before him..:P

I think I had the worst time with Dark Fact out of everyone here. It took me about 70 straight minutes of retries before I finally beat him for the first time (Normal difficulty)--and since I had a fair share of instant deaths due to the disappearing platforms, there's a pretty good chance that equates to more than 70 attempts in total, even factoring in the few seconds speeding through the pre-fight dialogue every time. Vagullion took me a few shots, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as Dark Fact. The first few tries, his damned fireballs killed me before I'd gotten even a third of his life down, maybe less.

After beating Ys I, I attempted the Time Attack and failed miserably (I think I tried twice, because Vagullion killed me once as a result of my getting stuck in a doorway long enough for him to take out a third of my life). Some time later, I practiced the Dark Fact fight for around 40 minutes, trying to nail down some surefire opening moves. I at least managed a closer to (but still less than) 50% success rate against him, and then I gave another shot at Time Attack. First attempt: beat Dark Fact. Whew!

A look at YouTube shows that Dark Fact seems to be quite a bit easier in the previous versions of the game, especially the NES one (no instant-kill disappearing platforms in either half!). My main problem was running out of places to go because so much of the ground was gone, but some of these earlier versions seem to have Dark Fact dying with fewer hits, i.e., with more of the ground still intact.

Anyway, I'm glad that's over. My Ys I experience clocked in at just over 15.5 hours (got everything, filled in all the book data, never sold anything), but that clock only includes about 70 seconds of Dark Fact fight. . . .

Time to bump this topic because... Well... Yeesh >_> seriously, EVERY boss (except the Mantis one, which gave me trouble) was a piece of cake... Dark Fact? Wow... I'm on easy and even now, I wonder how everyone did so well >_> The only thing I missed, was the silver sword... I REALLY don't feel like going back to the beginning of the tower to grab it though, but, I can only get him to 85ish% :/ *sigh*... I'm not good with these type of 'reaction' bosses...

Wyrdwad

Silver Sword is a necessity, I'm afraid -- I don't believe it's even POSSIBLE to beat him without it, as you simply don't do enough damage.

-Tom

Terro

I had a feeling... Especially since the Flame Sword barely put a dent on him, and well, with that plus the blocks dropping so fast, it was pretty impossible...
*kisses walkthrough + forum help* I think I've become too used to easy games that walk you along, that I'm... almost not used to playing these older games, where exploring is necessary... Oh, and I used some REALLY nice fan-made maps too! It sure made the tower easier, especially when going back from the top to bottom a few times :/

Ok... Time for attempt #something! (Haven't tried that many so far...)

EDIT: 2 shotted him with that... Wow... I fell the first time, paid more attention and 0_0..... Felt liek when I first started the game and only had a sword, so had trouble taking down regular monsters on the plains :p It's just such a different (and specific!) game!

I am glad to hear you are enjoying the earlier Ys games. Ys II is by far my favorite in the series since I have a favorable bias towards the fast paced bump system and it offers a lot more than Ys I.

Man...

Play that sh*t on normal at least! X3

I only put it so low because I didn't know you had to be fully armored at the beginning v_v When it took 10 hits to kill anything and they killed you in like 3 hits, I was worried with the difficulty of the game >_> So when I messed up at the beginning, I restarted the file and went from normal to easy... Then it did end up being VERY easy, but I really didn't know what to expect, and how specific the game was about gear!

Dusty Starr
06-27-2012, 07:12 AM
Yeah, you REALLY need certain gear at certain points...

Well, I can not bad mouth you, what with me trying (and failing) to use a cheat code in Golden Axe III, but still. :3

Oh well... put Ys II on normal. :3 It is a bit less specfic... I think.

Terro
06-27-2012, 07:18 AM
Yeah, I plan on doing II on normal at least :p I'm not the type that will challenge myself with games and do hard or nightmare modes, but I do want a normal sort of difficulty. Like I said, this was a sort of exception. Plus, after hearing how II is pretty awesome and how its not like its big brother I, I plan on starting it tomorrow :)

Congrats. Now do it again on nightmare. :P (I'm not mad enough to try).

I don't know how to say this and sound believable, but I actually found the boss battles from the games easier when I played it in the Nightmare difficulty. I remember that every boss took me at least like 5 tries (most of the times even more) to beat them, and when I re-played the games in the hardest mode, they only took me like one or two tries. In fact, the only one that I struggled a little with was the final boss in Ys II, and that because I forgot the equip the Cleria Shield, after that I defeated it on my first try.

Kinda weird, I guess that it's because I already knew how the game worked

This... is incredibly accurate. In hindsight, it was one of the funnest and most intense boss fights I have ever had the pleasure to play. At the time, of course, it was infuriating and impossible.
