Come! Let us deepen our bonds by sharing tales of rage and anger!
I actually have a long list but I'll keep things to a minimum here. :P
Here are some of the biggest offenders:
Imagine a road with no white dotted lines to separate the passing lane from the right/slow/inner lane. Also imagine that's wide enough for two cars to be travelling side by side on it. Now envision a damn car taking up the entire road by being smack in the middle.
>_<####
Yeah, there's no obligation for the driver to move near the curb or toward the median but come on, courtesy would suggest that you don't block the 10 or so cars behind you. >_> Let them pass, for BACON's sake! (And no, there are no cyclists or people to evade.)
The inability to differentiate between it's and its. Seriously, people, it's super simple! :O (For the record, I make the slip now and then. Well, it's that or the iPod touch's brilliant autocorrect feature which instantly takes every instance of "its" and makes it "it's". 9___9)
Snarky, rude, tactless people. Treat others the way you want to be treated, yeah?
Shopping centers during Christmas season. Too many people & too many stupid drivers stopping all over the place without regard or care for the drivers behind them.

Well, i'll be the first to admit that i share this exact sentiment, i always strive to treat people, both online and off, the same way i would like to be treated yet there are times where i get into a heated discussion or debate and i simply forget everything about treating others the same way i want to be treated and the inner demon in me makes an appearance.
I struggle with it sometimes, it hasn't gotten to the point where i've done permanent damage, but i fear one day, it might when i seriously irk someone off:eek:

The first one would be a friend of mine, his ALWAYS sleeping past schedules his set, i'm actually quite amazed his about to graduate from collage and hasn't slept past all his classes.
People who can't clean up after themselves i assume you meant? If so, thats just about everyone. Just because your in a restaurant and there's a waiter/waitress that cleans the table doesn't mean that you have to go out of your way to leave it as messy as humanly possible. The world isn't your own personal trash can, thats why trash cans exist, to dump garbage in them.
As for kids? lets not go there, i don't hate kids...but, well...better not go there :p
Oops, i suppose i should post one of my own xD
One of mine lately is people that spam me IMs repeatedly, just because you repeatedly spam my message window won't mean i'll reply any faster, if anything, i'll take LONGER to answer just on purpose, or simply log off.

One thing that has consistently bothered me for years is people who, while in any situation which involves sitting and waiting (clinic, airport, etc.) decide that their time is best spent serial calling every person in their cell phone's address book. Now, I have no problem if you really need to make a call or two, but after two hours of listening to you talk (often very loudly), I begin to suspect your phone use is just a stealthy way of saying "I did not plan ahead and bring a book or my laptop." Again, if you really need to make a call, go for it, but don't expect everyone sitting around you to be enthralled by your conversations for hours on end, especially when you repeat the same topics with every person to whom you are speaking.

I also hate when people are rude. Like when people don't say please and thank you and don't hold a door open for someone who's three feet behind them.

Yes. Yes, I do. It is the bane of all that is good and right in the world. Especially Hatsune Miku. *shudders*
You included that for my benefit, didn't you? (:
Again, I'd like to point out that the average Hatsune Miku song actually has fairly deep and meaningful lyrics -- or at least CLEVER lyrics -- which is more than can be said for most jpop songs. In fact, I bet if I were to link you to some of the more popular Hatsune Miku songs that have been covered by real people, you might even LIKE some of them!
...Except that you'd know they're Miku covers, so you probably would force yourself NOT to like them, out of spite. ;)
Anyway, back on topic... here's my list:
- People who don't follow escalator etiquette. This includes (A) taking up the entire width of an escalator that's clearly built wide enough for two people, or (B) standing side-by-side with someone (thus disallowing others from passing you). When you have a wide escalator, one side is for standing, and one side is for walking. And I'M A WALKER, DAGNABBIT. ;)
- Parking vultures, as I call them. People who sit in their cars in the middle of parking lots and wait for someone else to leave so they can take that space. There are RARE OCCASIONS when I can understand this behavior... but 99% of the time, it's totally unnecessary, and at least over 50% of the time it winds up creating a hazard by blocking anyone behind you from getting by. One of my proudest schadenfreude moments as a driver was sneaking my way past a parking vulture, then stealing the space he was waiting for, right out from under him. Take THAT, you lousy vulture! I hope you'd been waiting for like, 5 straight minutes. ;)
...On an unrelated note, Firefox recognizes schadenfreude as a valid word. I'm impressed!

I applaud you for coming out and saying that so casually, i can only hope that it doesn't erupt into something unpleasant.
Personally speaking though, i'm in the exact same boat, i'm not religious and i know alot of religious people with which i can get along just fine, but then there are those that try to force me their religion down my throat.
Buddy, i respect your religion and beliefs, but don't try to choke me on them, it's going to have the opposite effect of what your hoping for:mad:
I also hate when people are rude. Like when people don't say please and thank you and don't hold a door open for someone who's three feet behind them.
Always gonna have those unfortunately, i admit i don't say please too often, but i always make sure to thank people and i always look back before letting go of a door.
Now to hi-jack the thread a little:p
Back in 99 (i was 9 back then) we were moving to a new house and one thing led to another and the people that bought our old home ended up helping us finish loading up our stuff in the U-haul my dad rented and everyone was in the process of carrying furniture and boxes into the new house and as i was coming in the front door, the guy that had bought our old house was coming in right behind me with a box and i KNEW that, yet i slammed the door right on his nose.
Don't ask me why i did that, bet the guy started hating that kid that almost (i think?:p ) broke his nose!

Well, look at it this way...at least said person HAS a reason to park there like a jerk, unlike certain people that simply park there to wait for the husband/wife/son/daughter/friend/relative/etc that went to buy something.
Cmon, park your car in parking space or move out of the BACONing (i can't believe i just said that...) way already <_<

Nah. It's really just that Hatsune Miku (and Vocaloid in general) epitomizes everything I hate about j-pop. Not its subject matter, but the simple, robotic nature of the singing. One syllable per note, with almost no deviation from the formula. No heart or soul put into it. Just plug a voice into it and you've got yourself a song. Doesn't matter if it's good or bad. It just works. It's enough to put me off of the music entirely, regardless of the subject matter.

People who do that drive me crazy! It's especially infuriating when they wait for someone to back out of a spot when there's another spot TWO SPACES BEHIND THE ONE THEY'RE WAITING FOR. I'll never understand why people do that. Are they really that lazy? I always just take the first spot I see, no matter how far it is from the store. Oh no, I have to walk an extra ten feet. The horror. :p
And speaking of parking, it also annoys me when people don't know how to park. I'm talking about the people who park over the line and take up two spaces...or four...or the really skilled bad parkers who manage to take up six spaces...

I'm usually not bothered by too much, but things that really aggravate me (in an "Aaaaarrrrghhh--!!!" way) are:
-Elitists, and the arrogantly rude (the whole "Pfft, I don't have to be courteous to you because I am better than you" attitude). For some reason, it aggravates me even more when I see someone doing this to someone else. If someone does it to me, I usually don't feel bad, since I already know they aren't all that amazing by how rude they are. However, for other people, they might actually feel bad or intimidated, and that's what makes me angry.
-When people move the things on my desk in an effort to "organize" it or make it look "neater," and then I never know where anything is anymore! It might look messy, but it's organized in my head, darnit!
-People that aren't competent at what they do who actively suppress any attempts of criticism. Who d'you think you're kiddin', huh?
...Also, all this speak of car woes makes me feel I should finish getting a license. Then I'd be able to share with you all the disdain for the horrible drivers and traffic in my area. XP

One thing that tends to bother me is when people attempt to prove that something (consoles, games, movies, etc.) is objectively good or bad. If you ask me, they're just... things, and the perception of "good" or "bad" is entirely up to the person using it. Everyone has different standards. One man's trash is another man's treasure, you know?
Elitism also often bothers me, though that often goes hand-in-hand with the above point.
One more thing (this is more minor) is when I say something and then whoever I'm talking to feels the need to point out that what I said is just my opinion. Isn't that obvious? Assuming I don't say something is fact, it should be implied that what I'm saying is opinion. (Again, this is all kind of connected to the first one...)

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGgGH. MRrrrrrrgghhrr. Interrupttioonnssssssssss.
I really REALLY despise being bothered while on the phone. Co-workers have the tendency to do that. There's also one that keeps asking me to put the person on the other end on hold. 9___9
I just ... hate talking to someone and then need to cover the mouthpiece of the receiver and speak to the person that's standing beside me and asking me a million questions. Seems like I'm disrespecting the person I'm talking to on the line since it seems kind of weird to suddenly ask them to hold. :\
Maybe I just can't multi-task with people while on the phone or something. :/
I hate religious people who force their beliefs on others. I'm not religious, but it's not like I hate people who are religious. Just keep your beliefs to yourself and everyone will be happier.

Maybe not really the same as forcing beliefs onto others but I'm not all that fond of missionaries and such either, but alas, I think it's part of the Mormon way for them to go around and speak to people about their religion? (Not sure if it's the same about other religions.)
I was in Salt Lake City a few years back and visited the LDS temple (and wow, is it ever a gorgeous piece of architecture!! Wish I could have gone in but it's prohibited. :\). Ran into some Sisters there who tried to offer me The Book of Mormon but my Mormon friend, who was giving me the tour of the grounds, managed to get me out of it. ^^
(They weren't forcing it on me or anything but I was all duuuuuuurr and just sort of didn't know how to reply. ^^;;;;;)
Other than this, YES, people that don't say "thank you" when I hold the door for them should go and get hit by a car or something.
ABOUT THOSE PARKING VULTURES~
It's usually parking spots that are close to the entrance of a store or whatnot that they do this, yeah? It's like gee, whatever happened to parking farther and walking a few extra steps? >_>
And yeah, like Sgt Phantomizer said, the ones that just plop themselves on the side to wait for someone is just plain rude. What's worse is when you're FOLLOWING these types of drivers and they suddenly stop. Of course, they don't signal so you don't know if it's a temporary pause or if they're just going to be parking their BACON right then and there. BACONers! >:(

One syllable per note, with almost no deviation from the formula. No heart or soul put into it. Just plug a voice into it and you've got yourself a song.
Unsurprisingly, I wholly disagree with this. People put so much of their heart and soul into Miku songs... That's actually the reason WHY Miku songs tend to have such good lyrics, IMHO: because they're all fan-made. Basically, they're made by people who can't sing, but CAN compose, and want to share their songs with the world... and Miku gives them the ability to do exactly that.
And when you have a well-composed vocaloid song, you CAN hear the emotion in it (largely because there IS an actual person behind each of the vocaloids -- although the order in which the syllables are sung is computer-generated, the syllables themselves were actually sung and recorded by human beings).
I would even go so far as to say that many vocaloid songs have MORE heart and soul than typical pop hits, since a lot of pop hits are basically written by numbers in a board room somewhere, and sung by the "idol du jour" who's really only going through the motions in order to get a paycheck... whereas vocaloid compositions are written by people with songs in their hearts, who desperately want to share them with the world.
...But, it's not in my place (nor is it on-topic) to condemn anyone for his/her pet peeves. I think we should both just keep PurpleDoom's quote in mind:
One man's trash is another man's treasure, you know?
Truer words have never been spoken!

I will never ever understand the logic behind tailgating. I think people put too much faith in their brakes and simply believe that they can stop before crashing into the car in front of them should that car suddenly stop for whatever reason.
What kills me the most is when the next lane is completely free, with TONS of room to move over, and yet, the dumbBACON driver behind continues to follow me.

Horrible grammar on the most basic level drives me nuts, too. A couple non-favorites of mine are "grate" instead of "great" (it's traumatizing how frequently I've seen this) and "effect" and "affect", which even the most professional writers screw up sometimes.

To be fair, for that last one, "effect" being used as a transitive verb has been officially accepted into American English as a valid grammatical alternative to "affect," so it's not technically WRONG to use "effect" in that manner anymore... though I'm with you, I hate seeing it. (:

For the first one, i'll admit i used to do that a lot (i also do alot very often!) until a friend "re-educated" me :p
As for the other one, i think thats mostly a product of cell phone texting, at least thats the conclusion i've come to as whenever a friend messages me from their cell phone, every word has the first letter capitalized.

Glad to find some like-minded people here, i typically have my own opinions and i tend to stick to them no matter what and it's amazing how many people, even friends tease and criticize me for it. Okay, i don't care for anything CoD....so what? do i seriously need a VALID reason that YOU agree with to not like the game? I don't like it, period.
One other friend of mine constantly does the "you have" thing. Granted, he doesn't say it like that and i have the odd feeling that it's simply because his terrible with english as it's not his primary language, but even if you don't have the person face to face or are hearing him speak, once you talk with someone enough via messenger or emails, you tend to interpret what they say in certain ways, it's kind-of hard to explain, but the point is his ALWAYS doing that. It's like he literally expects me to drop what i'm doing to chat with him, it's not my fault he lives on the other side of the world and whenever he can get online it's still so early that i'm sleeping or it's late when i get the chance to sit down to game for a few hours.

As for the other one, i think thats mostly a product of cell phone texting, at least thats the conclusion i've come to as whenever a friend messages me from their cell phone, every word has the first letter capitalized.
You mean the phones do that automatically? Does this friend of yours capitalize each word in emails or chats?

Thats the conclusion i've come to, i can't say for certain because i don't do messaging of any sort on my cell phone, but thats about the sum of it. I started noticing the trend when i compared messages i knew he sent from his phone to messages i knew he sent from his PC.
Again, thats just my assumption, i never like asked or anything because i merely found it to be something of a curiosity, but it never really bothered me.

To be fair, for that last one, "effect" being used as a transitive verb has been officially accepted into American English as a valid grammatical alternative to "affect," so it's not technically WRONG to use "effect" in that manner anymore... though I'm with you, I hate seeing it. (:
This is terrible! They don't even mean the same thing! >:(

Oi. I have quite a few.
All around "Bad Driving/Car related" etiquette will always be my #1 pet peeve. This includes (but is not limited to) texting while in motion, tailgating, not using turn signals, spot stealing, parking in-between two spaces or just baaaaarely over the line so another vehicle cannot fit into the next space over unless they also park terribly, playing music so loudly that it disrupts other drivers, and opening car doors so that they smack into neighboring vehicles (especially when there are people inside!!).
I despise people on the internet who act obscenely rude and inappropriate solely because they have the ability to "hide" behind a screen-name and not be held accountable for their behavior.
I loathe those who are purposefully jerks (or just horribly cold) towards receptionists, waiters/waitresses, cashiers, and other types of customer service agents because they believe they belong to a lower species. I can't stand religious zealots who make it a daily point to shove their own particular faith down your throat while expressing your personal beliefs are "incorrect". I cannot deal with guys who exhibit a constant and pronounced disrespect for women. Hate racists, and I've lost count of the total number of guys I've lost my temper with and beaten the crap out of for exclaiming their belief that all gays deserve to be burned, hung, skinned, gathered and gased, and/or eliminated in some other type of horrendous fashion.
Sooooo I guess in general my pet peeves are hateful, rude, ignorant, racist, bigoted, sexist, and overly elitist types of behavior. Online grammar/spelling doesn't bother me too badly unless it's glaringly ill-written. I type how I speak, and I know I'm not the best writer, speller, or linguist, so I try not to get on anyone's case about that sort of thing unless you can tell they're just really lazy and uncaring.

I gotta add to the whole lack of driving etiquette thing.
I really really reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally hate people that drive below the speed limit when there is no rain or horrid weather conditions (and this includes no attempt from the sun to blind people), there are no pot holes, no jay walkers, no construction, no accidents -- just NOTHING to give the person a reason to be so goddamn slow.
And I'm talking like 10 - 20 below the speed limit. I actually followed an idiot for a while that did 50 km/h in a 70 km/h zone (because he was ON THE CELL PHONE) with no chance to pass since the cars in the other lane were just barreling down the road with their 80 - 100 km/h speed one after another. Drove me insane.
If the conversation is so important that you have to impede traffic, why not pull into a parking lot, park your car and THEN chat? Selfish BACONBACONS!
We actually have a law in our province that bans the use of electronic devices while driving but lord knows there's not enough police officers on the road to enforce that. >:(
Whee. Rage~~~~~~
(And yeah, I realize there could be other non-obvious issues as to why a driver is going slow but I do find that cell phone usage is usually the culprit.)

People who don't show consideration towards others can sometimes darken my mood, but nothing in particular really sets my blood boiling. I once shared a flat with a guy who never washed up his stuff (when asked, he would rinse things quickly under cold water) and also "shared" my food without returning the favour much. I suppose that was somewhat infuriating at the time, but I try to be philosophical about these things.
I drive "like an old granny", according to my old driving instructor (I'm not personally condoning agism or sexism), so it's in my interest to be an oasis of calm on the road, since I don't have the skill to back up more aggressive impulses. I suppose my pet peeve would probably be bicyclists on narrow, windy country lanes, but that's probably because I'm bacon at overtaking.
People at my university library used to annoy me by borrowing important texts and articles and then just sitting on them despite recalls. They would be heavily fined, but they got to keep their stuff for as long as they wanted, which can often be a bit inconvenient if you have an imminent exam. This no longer annoys me because I make sure to nick them first. :P

Here's my biggest one of all, second only to bad grammar: euphemisms. The single biggest way that we (especially we Americans) lie to ourselves. Coming up with alternate words to call things to make the truth less unpleasant. The most irritating of all is, not coincidentally, the biggest: the plethora of words to disguise that someone is fat.
Heavy-set, hefty, plus-sized, chunky, portly, big guy/girl, "bigger," Rubenesque, etc. All complete garbage. Even "voluptuous" has been co-opted by the amorphous blobs of America. No. If you want to see a voluptuous woman, look up a picture of Christina Hendricks.
But worst... the absolute worst of ALL of these... is "curvy."
"Real women have curves." How very American. "I'm fat and I may not be proud of it, but I'm too lazy to do anything about it." Real women have curves, but some of them are meant to be concave.
If your waist measurement is bigger than your chest measurement, then there's probably something wrong, regardless of gender! Personally, I'm fat, and I'm not proud of it, but I can admit it to myself (and everyone else), and I'm working on it.
Grrrr.

Oh, I never said anything about attractiveness. I've seen plenty of people who were plenty overweight who looked damn good anyway. But there's nothing sexy about being morbidly obese, or using euphemisms to lie to oneself. Self-deception is never appealing.

Ah. I think we just view "euphemisms" a little differently, as I have no problem with any of those words you listed. In fact, each of them is in some ways quite uniquely descriptive -- "curvy," for example, describes a particular body type that not all overweight people have.

On euphemisms--
I do find myself using them when speaking with others, in an attempt to spare them their feelings. Maybe I've not enough space in my balloons, but I don't like to be reminding people of something they live with daily and probably know plenty about. If I must mention it, then I feel I ought to propose a solution as well, or (if I've got the time) offer a hand and some encouragement in fixing the problem.
However...
It is awfully odd when people use euphemisms when referring to themselves. I mean, if someone morbidly obese called themselves "just curvy" as if there was no issue...oh, come on! Now your head's just stuck in the sand.

=P Hey! Euphemisms aren't completely dishonest, since they are synonyms and mean the same thing as the more caustic term.
I must say that honesty does help at times, though, and it does take an admirable amount of courage to say. I do regard frank honesty as a sign of respect.
I just dislike the use of bluntly insulting words, especially when describing people when they aren't present in the same room. When people by me are gossiping, or decide they want to gossip with me (urk) and mention something like, "you know, such and such is so [derogatory adjective]!"
I tend to answer that with, "hey, they aren't that [derogatory adjective]. They're just...kind of...[euphemistic synonym]." =P
I just...don't like how people like to use all the harsh words when the person in question isn't present, just because they feel they can, yet they don't have any such words when that person is in the same room. However, they come to tell those words to me. Hrmph, so...what, y'want ME to go and tell them what you just told me, or what?
...But wait, now I'm a hypocrite, since I'm here ranting about people (behind their backs) who rant about people behind their backs.
...
To be fair, I have actually asked them the question, "What, would you like me to confront them about this?" However, they usually respond with a negatory.

Honesty is kind of like pregnancy; one either is or one is not. There is no gray area. This is exactly what Carlin was talking about: "soft language" to hide the truth. Changing the name of something doesn't change what it is. It changes how people tend to think of it, though, and perception being reality, reality is ergo changed and so forth. Read George Orwell's 1984. There's a very good reason why there are no words for "bad" in use in that world... rather, "double-plus ungood."
Put another way, a phrase may be synonymous with a word, but the phrase will never mean as much as the word does.

Yes, I've read 1984--the ending really disturbed me. Blegh...! Just thinking about it gives me the chills. It was an interesting novel and thought experiment, though.
That kind of white washing is an extreme; it abolishes use of the stronger words in our vocabulary, which shouldn't happen since there are times that there's no better ways to describe things than the real gritty of it.
Hmm, and "honesty is kind of like pregnancy." ...
Alright--! I can agree one could be honest or not, pregnant or not, true or false. However, the reasons and circumstances about why and how one speaks true or falsehood often might color the honesty or dishonesty.
Just using weight as an example, since it was brought up earlier...
The phrases, "Morbidly Obese," "Chunky," and "Skinny"--do they only represent two positions (either honest, or dishonest)? Chunky and Skinny might both represent something that isn't the complete truth, but I wouldn't call them the same, either.
Even the complete truth, used in different situations, can have different connotations. ("Morbidly Obese" can be hurtfully used in everyday language, yet it is also used as an objective medical term to describe a condition)
Whether a statement someone makes is the complete truth is up to the individual--what's most important to me is the "why." Understanding "why" enhances one's perspective of that truth, giving it depth--a third dimension to the flat binary that is only "true" or "false."
The world in black and white is a tempting prospect, believe me (being a scientist by trade). However--! If it appears that simple, you've usually only scratched the empirical surface and haven't really gotten to the tender meat of things yet, so to speak.

No, no. I merely use it as an example of how people (specifically Americans) like to deceive themselves with language. Weight is not binary; indeed, it's not even digital. But there is a pretty clear line of demarcation as to what is and is not healthy.

But regardless, i don't think we need to go around pointing out the obvious, even if we know it might offend the person in question. I would never greet a friend/relative/etc that i hadn't seen in a few years with "Hey, you've gotten fatter!" or "Hey, you've gained some weight in the past few years" or so on, if i MUST say something about it (because on most occassions, i don't because in reality...it's none of my buisness) i prefer to be subtle in the matter and go with maybe "Hey, you've changed" or "Hey, you look different".

I'm actually a fairly taciturn individual; I try not to speak unless I feel I have something to say that's worth listening to. I don't deliberately go around and needle people with my observations, but when my opinion is asked for, I don't sugarcoat things. When I feel the impulse to speak, I am not given over to tact for its own sake. And if I'm ever provoked into speaking, the results are rarely pretty. Even those who agree with me have often accused me of going too far/crossing boundaries.
Ironically, I worked in customer service for years, and generally had a stellar record, largely because I knew exactly how to speak to people to manipulate their moods and emotions. Humans attribute so much meaning to simple biology, but it's a lot simpler than most would care to believe.

What exactly do you mean, "humans attribute so much meaning to simple biology?"
Primarily that we are purely the product of biology. Nothing about us is not physical in nature. Our personalities, emotions, memories, will, wants, likes, dislikes, everything can (and should) be attributed to purely physiological origins. As humans, we (collectively) like to think we're somehow separate from the animals of the world, when, in fact, we're just another species among the millions. Indeed, the term, "great ape," was actually coined in order to drive a wedge between humans and their closest evolutionary relatives: chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas. There's this desperate flailing drive to find some kind of "greater purpose" for humanity's existence, when the reality is much simpler.

I can see where you're coming from, but you're already losing some sense of Japanese culture by translating into English in the first place. The game may be Japanese, but the characters are speaking English, and English has different honorifics. I can see where you're coming from, but you're already losing some sense of Japanese culture by translating into English in the first place. The game may be Japanese, but the characters are speaking English, and English has different honorifics. I think it's better to go for a full translation rather than have some sort of half-translation with honorifics and romanji left in.
I'm pretty certain that nunuu is, like Suzaku, deliberately messing with me, as they are both wont to do.

I do think there's SOME merit in using honorifics and words like "senpai" or "kouhai" in English translations IN RARE INSTANCES, but I'd say unless you're specifically releasing a game or anime with otaku culture as its target audience (think Genshiken or Comic Party, for example), it's probably not a very good idea to risk it.
That having been said, though, I had no issue with this translation choice in Persona 3 and 4. I don't think *I* would've gone that route if I were translating those games... but I understand why Atlus did, and I think it was used to good effect, for what it's worth.

No. No, no, no, no, no. There is always a way of writing around it. Someone showed me the Persona translations, and I was absolutely appalled to see that even such obscure, "cutesy" derivations like "-tan" had been kept in. I also found it to be a little unpleasant, in light of the whole Nevada-tan incident.
There is no excuse for keeping any Japanese word in an English translation that is not a proper name or a word that has been adopted into English common use (ie. "samurai").
Wyrdwad
05-06-2011, 05:04 PM
Are you at all familiar with Genshiken and Comic Party, the examples I cited?
They're basically anime (and games, in Comic Party's case) that are so deeply rooted in otaku subculture, they basically would never appeal to anyone who isn't him/herself a huge anime nerd. They're like the Akihabara of anime -- celebrations of what it means to be a Japanese nerd.
And in cases like that, leaving honorifics and certain words untranslated actually seems like it would be in keeping with the feel of the original work -- especially since both shows use honorifics as a plot device at one point or another, where one character notes that another called him/her "chan" instead of "san" and reads into it, or where a female character is creeped out by being called "tan," etc.
I do see those as the exception, however, rather than the rule -- and like I said, even Persona 3 and 4 aren't games where I would've personally taken that route, if I were the translator.
But if I were translating Comic Party? Then yeah, I might just go that route. I think it's what fans would expect, and I think it would help preserve the feel of the original work.

I suppose I can see that. I haven't seen the shows in question, as I don't really watch anime anymore. Generally speaking, no one holds guns to my head frequently enough for it to happen. But from what you're describing, it makes sense.

Nah, I'm fine. You'll find I'm rarely genuinely upset by anything online.
=P I'm relieved to hear that.
Honorifics usually don't bother me too much, but if there's excessive foreign language for words that do have common English translations (...which I see a lot in some fanfictions), that's when I go, "Aaaarrgh!"
The voice actors pulled off Persona 3 & 4's honorifics pretty naturally, so I thought they were fine. I did have prior knowledge of what honorifics were, though; I don't know what it looks like to someone who has never seen it before.

I was just kidding. ^^
In terms of manga, it does kind of drive me nuts to see the -sama honourific as well as -nim (in English translations of Korean comics) when no other characters have honourifics after their names. >_>
Still on the subject on manga, I also get annoyed when manga is referred to as Japanese manga and manhwa is referred to as Korean manhwa. Is it REALLY necessary to point out the language when it's obvious the comics originated from either Japan or South Korea?
I know there's American made manga and such but really now, those are exceptions. ^^

Wholeheartedly agreed. Ever heard of an anime called "I My Me: Strawberry Eggs"? Ridiculously stupid title aside, it's actually a really good romantic comedy anime that I'd highly recommend checking out... but the translation is extremely awkward! It's a quality translation overall, and sounds pretty natural in English (and actually has a surprisingly fantastic dub, too!)... but the whole series is about a man who cross-dresses in order to become a teacher at an all-girls school where men aren't allowed.
Except, in the translation, he's not a teacher... he's a "kyoshi"! He has lines like, "I'm going to be the best darned kyoshi I can possibly be!"
...It's extremely jarring, because there is absolutely NO DISCERNIBLE REASON to leave the word "kyoshi" untranslated. It means teacher! That's it! It has no deep-rooted cultural significance... it's a word that directly translates as teacher or instructor! Heck, the DVD liner even has a translation note about it... that basically ramble on for several paragraphs, but ultimately concludes that KYOSHI MEANS TEACHER.
I still consider that the most baffling, inexplicable example I've ever seen of NON-localization. I mean, name endings are one thing, as they really DON'T have an adequate English equivalent. Same with words like "senpai" and "kouhai," as the whole in-group/out-group aspect of Japanese culture is totally foreign to most English-speakers. You can usually rewrite lines that include these words, however, to get across a roughly equivalent meaning... but if you go the "easy route" and just leave them untranslated, I'm totally OK with that. It's perfectly justifiable.
But when you just start leaving random words in Japanese... that's when I get really suspect! (:

I..I actually watched that, and I remember that too. They called gymshorts BURUMA too?
Wyrdwad
05-07-2011, 07:26 AM
Ehh, that one's a little more acceptable IMHO, as "buruma" (or "bloomers") are a very particular TYPE of gym shorts designed specifically for girls. I might've translated them as "bloomers," myself, since that's both the proper term AND the origin of the word "buruma"... but at least it's something relatively specific that can theoretically be justified by the translators.
There's simply no justification whatsoever for "kyoshi," though. That one's just plain baffling to me.

I'd like to note that the iPod touch 4G has the most horrible randomization programming EVER.
I have about 500+ songs on the damn thing and it only cycles through the same 100 tunes. WTF?
I guess not enough people use the Shuffle feature religiously like I do so no one's ever bothered to harass Apple about it. Or maybe it's more like not enough people have harassed them about it.
And yeah yeah, you can tell me Apple and the I stuff suck but the Creative Zen I have isn't much better in terms of randomizing songs. (And yeah, Creative sucks too. :P)
But you know, the 3rd gen (I think it's a 3rd gen) iPod I own was pretty good at shuffling the playlist. I don't know what's happened since then. :(

Late to the party, but random-@ss pet-peeves that started to get to me lately. Figured I'd vent.
- Whenever somebody says "Finally, (insert console here) won't be collecting any more dust", or any other forms of that sentence. Here's an idea, how about you learn how to clean your god-damn room, or maintain your crap better?
- Or "Finally, a good game on (insert console here)". For every time someone says that about a different game, you'd actually have a pretty freaking big library!
(EDIT: I understand that people don't like certain genres, or prefer one over other btw. That isn't the point of what bothers me. It's specifically the "good game" part; as if people are saying that the platform never once had a good game.)
I hate gamers sometimes. :P
Other things:
- Divas, bar-stars, or any other types of those people that think they're hot sh!t while they're out every night clubbing. These people I see every night, which is why I've been aiming to switch my career to teaching. The people I see while bartending annoy the hell out of me. :l

Guilty as charged. Think of it more as a synonym for "I haven't played this system in a while" since I doubt most people are posting with the intent to share the fact that WOW ITS GOT DUSTES(ES) ON IT! because if that were the case my room is space (dust).

Oh, I get that more often than not, it's used as a synonym for that. It still doesn't annoy me any less, lol. Maybe just because I hear it all the time? Or maybe 'cause the real hidden meaning behind it being used is "lol this console has no games". In any case, it's one of those sayings that just rub me the wrong way, regardless of the context.
Gotcha. Blatant and ultimately pointless console rage tends to get me more than anything, but I completely understand what you mean.

Guess the primary (insert console here) is the Wii or older consoles that you always hear about from mostly everyone else.

Blatant and ultimately pointless console rage
HA! I don't know why by I read that as "Blatant and ultimately pointless caserole rage".
*pictures caserole rage*
Random Kid: "Mom, what's for dinner tonight!"
Mother: "Broccoli caserole!"
Random Kid: "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!" X(
PFFFFT casserole rage is never pointless, the stuff can be awful.

I never had casserole before, but if all forms of it are delicious, then casserole bias can go to hell too! D:
but if all forms of it are delicious
This will never be a problem.

When every pump at the gas station is full, there's a kajillion people waiting, and some bright soul finishes pumping their gas and decides to leave their car parked at the pump for 10 minutes while they go buy snacks even though there's 5 open parking spots that aren't in front of pumps. >:|

I hate that so much. Whenever I buy something in the store after putting gas in the car I always drive away from the pump, regardless of how many people are there.

Survival tip number one for your car and you. ALWAYS LOOK AT THE ROAD!!! You can't even believe how many cars never notice you in Puerto Rico and with roads being relatively small here well you get a car crash around every 22 minutes around the island. Survival tip number two for your car and you: Never honk your car horn here. Chances are you might get shot.
Its a pet peeve because well barely anybody follows these rules anymore. Also loud music as posted before damn some people must be deaf over here since they have the volume set so high.

I hate people who don't give me a chance to prove myself. They're not worth my time. Oh well. I'm awesome, so it's their loss.

People with their car stereo's volume and bass up as high as possible, and who then proceed to park, like, right in front of my house. <_< Uhg.

With the unnaturally warm weather here lately, the bane of spring has descended upon my house. Thats right. Ladybugs! I CAN'T STAND THEM! They are everywhere!! And if you try to get rid of them they make a stink that only attracts even more ladybugs.

$4.44 per gallon for gas, that is my pet peeve right now. (Probably not the most expensive in the country but that doesn't make it feel any better.)

This begged the question: is this error message your pet peeve, or is your list that long? (I guess we'll never know, given the banned status...)
Subject at hand, well... most fandoms in general are my pet peeve. Too many of them expect everything for a mere fraction (if even that at times!) of the cost, and whine the moment they don't get what they want. (Let's see, XSEED... we've got Grand Knights History, RGC2... :P ) Other peeves of mine are just something I'm going to have to deal with; I'm quite the fan of having physical media for pretty much everything, but the trend is away from that. (Plus I get the thrill of still finding that NES game I want...) Then there are the leeches who call themselves 'fans', yet harm the industries more than help them, the ones who overhype things past any realistic expectation, the constant remakes/re-releases of things... yeah, I'm gonna stop before I start ranting...

my pet peeve?.......eh.......let's think......*thinks*................*thinks more*.........*eats a bagel then think more*........*drops bagel in drama* GOT IT!
In monster hunter Tri! Anyone who gets into a quest with a weapon they can't even decently use and are disruption everyone!
Sword and shield? Well at least I can't expect you to be that disruptive.
Greatsword? That upswing is only good if you're trying to hit the tail! Not when trying to hit my face!
Hammer? You know why hammers are good? because they can stun monsters! You know how? BY HITTING THEIR FACE NOT MINE!
Lance? 5478 people each year suffer from a lance charge into their *censor* while trying to enjoy a good hunt. If you've been one of their victims please call the number below:
1-800-HAT-EYOU.
Switch-Axe? What a marvelous weapon that can explode! It can really pack a punch! You know what else packs a punch? YOUR FRIENDS WHEN YOU'RE NOT BLASTING THEIR FACES WITH IT! Also please refrain from using the upswing from the Axe-Mode, it really isn't nice.
Longsword? Such power, such magnificence, such grace, a weapon to behold. You know what else is good about this weapon? It has a long reach, LONG ENOUGH TO DISRUPT YOUR FRIENDS! DON'T GET TOO CLOSE TO THEM YOU NOT-NICE GUY!
Bowgun? I know my friend that the monster we are fighting is an exceptionally large foe. Yes I also know that using pellet ammo is a very effective method. A VERY EFFECTIVE METHOD TO GET YOUR FRIENDS KILLED WHEN YOU FIRE IT AT THEM AND THE MONSTER GOBBLES THEM UP WHILE THEY CAN'T MOVE BECAUSE OF YOUR INCOMPETENCE!
Thank god I mastered each of these weapons to be very helpful, not disruptive and use them for their strengths, not their weaknesses!
