Absolutely amazing Basiscape soundtrack to an absolutely amazing game... and neither the soundtrack nor the game is very popular, sadly. :( But let me tell you, Opoona has some of the best game music I've heard in many, many years. Listen for yourself!
More or less, this is the first "town" theme (it's technically a biodome-slash-school-campus, but if it had to be classified, I think it would classify as a town theme):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auFOQLnI1cg
(Has a slow start, but if you skip ahead to 0:34, you'll hear why I love this track so much!)
The "Blue Desert Hotel" theme. Again, would probably rank as a "town" theme... but it's not a town, it's a posh resort hotel! And it's one of my favorite songs in the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh4PWuxAuP4
The main battle theme -- think Hitoshi Sakimoto + Danny Elfman + Sabre Dance. It freakin' RULES:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjIt_8p16WM
The requisite water theme, easily joining the ranks of some of the best in video game music history (Super Metroid, Super Mario 64, etc.):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAO10cObdCs
I could keep going, but I think you get the idea. Go play the game and buy the OST! You won't regret it!

A little Vagrant Story, anyone? I loved how the opening CG movie went for a medieval James Bond "look" (I caught that right away) and then you got that awesome "trailer" if you let the game sit for a bit on the title screen. It was also one of the first PSOne titles to make good use of the PS2's "smoothing" function where the visuals got a nice boost with it turned on.

I hate to nitpick, guys, but Square stuff is too obvious. Virtually everyone who's into game music will have heard most, if not all, of their musical output. I was thinking of the more obscure/niche stuff (ie. the kind of stuff XSEED would be apt to license). Expand our horizons!
So, I present to you one of my favorite fighting game themes ever... and also probably the softest and most thoughtful.

Hey now, great as they are, not EVERYONE has played EVERY Square game EVER made, folks. I actually had to explain to some clerk in Gamestop a few weeks ago what Vagrant Story was after two customers got into a discussion about it and again last week to two people who were wondering if it "was any good" because it never got a sequel (!!!).
It's easy to be pompous and turn up one's nose at that sort of person "Oh, well... if you never heard of it... too bad!" or you can spend a few minutes educating them on something they may want to try and track down. I tend to go that latter route these days. Remember, it's a game that came out two console cycles ago, so it's essential in terms of not letting the younger generation of RPG players forget it exists.
That said, here's something a tiny bit more obscure:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=516EE9FBD498764F
Selections ("sketches") from the D2 soundtrack, including Arto Lindasy's haunting "Counting The Roses", which is used in the game pretty effectively and pops up again in the end credits. These tracks are actually from the infamous "Shock Demo" that came with the Dreamcast port of Real Sound: Kaze no Regret (a Saturn adventure/mystery game created for blind gamers, complete with a braille manual)...

Know about it? I got my start as a translator by fan-translating all 51 episodes of the anime. (: The PSP game is but a pale shadow of what the series truly has to offer -- there are 5 other games (plus a cell phone game and a PocketStation game) and 51 episodes of anime, as well as manga, tons of books, and other merchandise.
PopoloCrois was my original obsession, long before I ever became a Falcom fanboy. (:

Yep. The first three, anyway -- Japan can keep the two PS2 games. ;)
Anyway, back on topic... anyone here familiar with Tim Follin? As non-Japanese game music composers go, he's my absolute favorite. His MO was always to do things with sound chips that no one ever thought possible (as he not only composed music, but programmed the sound routines to play it, in most cases), and it really is amazing the sorts of sounds he was able to cull forth from early computer sound chips and the NES.
A couple choice examples from his NES portfolio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypNPxwnppU0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydqijqoMJ8U
(Silver Surfer is widely renowned as a bad game, but I think you'll agree its music is NOT at fault for that!)
And one (sadly unreleased) Genesis/MegaDrive composition that's absolutely MINDBLOWING:

Heh. They're kind of hit or miss for me (like all composers, really). However, I DID like a lot of their Ragnarok Online tunes.
The most recent work I've heard from them was off the Granado Espada OST. Can't say I liked or didn't like what they contributed on that since I don't even remember which ones were theirs! ^^

Their contributions were actually my least-favorite tracks on Granado Espada's OST, as they were all the generic dance-club tracks. The unique and interesting ones with a heavy focus on melody were all contributed by the other composers. (:

This was posted to my YouTube channel as a video response sometime within the last couple days, and it's REALLY cool. It's music from the Falcom game "Dinosaur," but... well, it's not the version from the original Dinosaur, nor is it the version from the 2002 remake "Dinosaur: Resurrection." It seems to be an old-school-styled arrange version or something, and there's no info in the video on where it came from, but it totally rocks!

Mega Man X has a soundtrack arranged by Alph Lyra (in-house Capcom musicians, I believe) into a 80s fusion style. A number of Capcom's soundtracks from the 90s, especially those involving Shinji Hosoe, were arranged or rearranged into a j-a-z-z fusion style. Chick Corea must have been an influence on them.

The first game kind of got lost in the shuffle for me after a while, which is really too bad as I've replayed it a bunch of times in recent years. I still loved that music though, to the point where I began figuring out how to play some of it on the trumpet. Goemon's Great Adventure wasn't even on my radar for a long time. I didn't know about it until I picked up both games at Gamestop when they were clearing out their N64 stock. Probably one of my best Gamestop used pickups aside from when I got Suikoden II for $20 because the store mislabeled it.

Yeah, their pretty unique games, my only gripe is that the camera is abysmal (Mystical Ninja) and difficulty (Goemon's Great Adventure) might end up putting alot of players off. I still enjoyed the alot though. Funny when i mention them to people and they go like "What the heck is that? sounds wierd." ;)

That's the general consensus of the game. ^^ But I'm a glutton (or perhaps a masochist?) for these kinds of hack-and-slash games.
In fact, I think Chaos Legion is one of the only games where I did multiple playthroughs from start to finish. Of course, that's only true for the Japanese version which is the one I own. It seems to have the right amount of grinding. The North American version has added PAIN with more monsters to beat up and the higher EXP amount needed to evolve Thanatos. I really don't like playing that version. :\
The story's rather simple though. I'd much rather read the novels but that probably won't happen in this lifetime.
Okei, let's keep on track with the topic now! XD

Shining Force music
Man, I really want to play Shining Force CD again. A couple months ago one of my best friends and I played Shining Force I together and had a super good time.
My same friend and I were talking about how music in Western RPGs has changed over the last decade and a half recently. I'm not really sure how to describe what it used to be - it was sort of something entirely unique to itself, this kind of strange blend of pop and film score and FANTASY. I have no idea what to call it, but it was neat and set the tone for these games in some ways a lot better than the orchestral music of today. Here are some cool examples.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVtiQ8Jp9RI
This song horrified me as a kid. I'm not even sure why, since it was the theme for this Dwarf town. It's sort of like if the Conan film score met Dueling Banjos. A really intense song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X10EzscllQw
This was the intro song for a post-apocalyptic RPG/strategy game called Burntime. The first 30 seconds are very pop-ish and then it transitions into this weird pseudo-techno. It's really cool.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX85kMZ6YCY
I like this song a lot. It played whenever you visited a healer in Blade of Destiny. It's got a totally different feeling from any contemporary Eastern games or modern Western RPGs, but I think it establishes the character of a healer really well. It's gentle and makes you think of some fantasy wizard or something.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur-hfHjP_XM
This song is a lot more orchestral than the others, but it's still got a strong melody and a lot of character. The dude who wrote this song also did music for Unreal and Deus Ex.
It's pretty cool stuff with a unique feeling that isn't captured by modern ambient orchestral music. Too bad they don't make it anymore! I'm not complaining, there's definitely some outstanding orchestral game music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLyqSQhS6E0), I just think that old style of music's neat character and memorable melodies contributed a lot to a game's atmosphere.

In my usual style, I've been really getting into Corpse Party on PSP, which has also rekindled my interest in Corpse Party's MUSIC. The game is creepy as all hell to begin with, and that's further enhanced by a soundtrack that honestly could stand toe-to-toe with Umineko no Naku Koro ni's (in my opinion, of course!).
This is the track that first caught my attention when I played the demo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeSZ14ivDAo
And after picking up the game's LE, these two immediately stood out to me on the soundtrack CD:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDG-6qZGVC8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-kjljVWEuw
That last one is the least creepy of the three, but MAN is it catchy -- it's been my mid-afternoon "wake up, dammit!" song all week. ;) Skip ahead to about 2:12 for the really awesome part!
I only wish the soundtrack CD were complete, as I've encountered quite a few tracks in-game that are AWESOME, but aren't actually included on the CD at all.

Not without custom firmware I couldn't.
I can easily RECORD the audio from the game, though -- and have done so in the past for games without soundtracks. That first Corpse Party video, in fact, was recorded directly from the J-PSN demo version of the game, before I had purchased the LE to get the soundtrack.

Piffle. You don't need custom firmware to rip game audio. You don't even need the original hardware.

Finding it online isn't the same as ripping it, remember. If you REALLY want to prove your point, you'll have to rip it yourself. Which means you'll have to buy the game!
It's a great game, though, in which peppy, optimistic children get horribly tortured -- so it might be right up your alley! ;)

Oh, I can rip it, depending on the format in which the audio files are done. I did it easily enough with Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki, among others. Most PSP games are just AT3 files, for which the decoding process is appallingly simple, once you get past the annoying hurdles of finding and installing the necessary programs.

AHA! I think I found out why the Corpse Party PSP soundtrack is missing so many tracks.
Because Corpse Party was originally a series of RPG Maker titles... and while they never quite reached Cave Story levels of grass-roots popularity, they were still popular enough in Japan that a separate soundtrack was released for them.
And while many of the tracks used in the PSP version have been rearranged, many others HAVEN'T... and I think the PSP soundtrack is, literally, just all the tracks that have been newly arranged from the original RPG Maker titles.
So yeah... in the interest of staying on-topic, here are a few additional Corpse Party tracks that I really like!

When I was a kid, I sat in front of my TV with a tape recorder and recorded all my favorite songs from Phantasy Star IV. I'm sure if I looked around at my dad's place I'd still be able to find that tape! It's weird saying this, but the music from Phantasy Star IV was very formative on the way I experience music. The music is very well written, but the FM sound engineering is exceptional. Making music with 16-bit frequency modulation sound chips is a precarious and delicate thing to do well. All of the sounds in Phantasy Star IV are very distinct and high quality; if any of their hex values had been changed by only one or two units, the entire sound would have been different. It's pretty amazing what the sound engineers did with the YM2612! Anyway, here are a bunch of songs that I like.

I think this is the weirdest song I've ever heard in a video game. It rules, it's this Pink Floyd-ish pseudo-psychedelic rock song that gradually intensifies as it goes on. It's pretty crazy. You know, it just occurred to me that I haven't posted some of my favorite recently-produced retro-style tunes in here yet...
...but before I do, I want to make one thing very clear:
THESE ARE NOT VOCAL THEMES. There is NO SINGING IN THEM. Yes, they're Hatsune Miku-related... but they're actually 8 bit-style songs from the Hatsune Miku platformer "Hello, Planet," which was available as part of a Project Diva expansion pack. Basically, divorce the idea of Miku from your head for a moment, and just... listen to these as pieces of video game music. If you like 8 bit-style retro synth, I can virtually guarantee you'd LOVE this game's soundtrack... and these are my three favorite songs from it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ3ziMqA0zo
First level theme. Peppy, catchy... everything you'd expect from the first level theme in a platformer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNSX1_-OYeM
Final level theme. Much more sinister and urgent-sounding. Probably my favorite track in the game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixG5Vv3r-Uc
Final "boss" theme. Yeah, it's a trivia battle... but it's still a battle, and you can't deny that this is one heck of an awesome boss theme!
The game itself is actually quite good, albeit VERY short (only 4 levels, sadly). Still, if you're looking for something with which to kill a couple hours, and you have access to Japanese PSN (when PSN is back up, anyway!), I highly recommend picking it up. The expansion is called "Hatsune Miku: Project Diva - Miku Miku no Uta Okawari" ("Miku Miku's Song Seconds," essentially), and while the new Project Diva songs aren't playable unless you own the game, you can still watch the videos associated with them, and the "Hello, Planet" game is completely standalone... and the whole expansion only costs 2000 yen (about $20)... so it's not the worst deal in the world, really. (:
Food for thought, at any rate!

Haha, yeah, Zero Wing is how I found Tatsuya Uemura. It's one of the only shmups I've ever played and I'm crazy about the soundtrack. Submarine Tunnel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnur5w5cM8I&feature=related) is one of my favorite video game songs of all time. It starts out like something out of an 80s teen movie and does this wild 180 from kind of goofy and fun to serious and catchy. His style is immediately recognizable - he draws as much from 70s and 80s heavy rock as he does from synthpop. It's neat stuff!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PTPgBpX6GI
This is so early 80s I think I'm going to explode. I love that tremolo on the last note at the end of the main phrase.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lglJCqw9vnw
In contrast with that last song, which was heavy metal-ish, this one is totally Italo disco.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm58yP-ItE4
Everything Toaplan did was pretty cool. Apparently after they folded, most of them went over to Cave and are still there now. This Vimana song is from a shmup they made that's based on Hinduism. That rules.

Tom, you should play Twinkle Star Sprites. A game with aesthetics that cater to your slightly... effete tastes, but with ridiculously awesome and intense gameplay to accompany it. ;)

Actually, you should play Moon! The aesthetics may not be toooo much to your liking, but I bet the game itself would be. It's very, VERY unique, and more than a little cynical. (:

Man, I've always wanted to play Moon. I don't know much about it other than that it has great sprite work and that it seems kind of quirky. I wish it had gotten a Western release, it looks like something I'd really enjoy.

I'm going through all this old shmup music and it is super cool. I wish I knew more about it. I think I've played like 3 shmups my entire life (Twinkle Star Sprites is one of them, amazingly).

With Corpse Party announced, it's unsurprising that a few people have brought up Clock Tower -- one of my favorite horror games of all time. Which, of course, got me reminiscing and listening to some of its music on YouTube. Overall not the sort of soundtrack you'd listen to in your car, but it fits the feel of the game soooo well... and the ending theme is a pretty amazing piece of music in general, with a fantastic beat and a great progression to it. It remains one of my favorite ending theme songs from any video game:

The game also has an interesting development history - there's a lot of suspicion it began life as its own project before Capcom decided to put Willow characters into it.

Heh, it seems we're destined to disagree with one another on a lot of things. I preferred NES Strider by leaps and bounds. (: Genesis Strider was fun, but was just a level-based platformer in the end. NES Strider was nonlinear and Metroidvania-esque, with a bigger emphasis on exploration and a more intricate storyline. And for me, story-heavy Metroidvanias ALWAYS win out over level-based platformers. (:

Aside from the lulzy Engrish, I must agree that the NES version's story was in fact better than the Genesis version.

This could seriously be the soundtrack to an RPG. Instead, it's the soundtrack to a platformer where you control a slime and hurl red rubber balls at enemies. (: Still one of my favorite underrated SNES soundtracks, though.

To this day, the soundtrack from Secret of Mana remains quite possibly my all time favorite game soundtrack. Happy music, gtfo of our village music, wtf is up with this giant skeleton lich and his creepy cult music...Mmm. Hiroki Kikuta is a musical god. Such a shame that the Mana series went to seed though. I can't begin to express how disappointed I am/was when even the ios got a port of SoM and the DS never got any of that love.
*cough* Anyways! I also really liked the music in Lunar Eternal Blue (guess I have to leave out Silver Star because of Xseed) and of course...Katamari Damacy!

***BE WARNED - CHRONO CROSS SPOILERS AHEAD***
Such an underappreciated game.
I really love the end credits of Chrono Cross. The beautifully haunting song combined with the visions of the journey spliced with scenes of Schala roaming time, trying to fulfill her promise to find Serge again, so that they can be together. I sometimes like to imagine how they meet again, and what their life is like.
Yeah, I'm a nerd like that.

I think I'm right. I know it has a lot of fans, but it has just as many who turn their nose up at because it either wasn't Chrono Trigger version 2, or because it was hard to understand.
To really understand the plot, especially how it connects to Trigger, and to pick up on many of the game's more subtle moments will take multiple playthroughs, or lots of reading of compiled information on Chrono Compendium. A lot of people didn't give it the time it deserved to really understand it, and become engrossed in it all. That's why I personally say it's underappreciated.

Well, yeah, it's a terrible sequel to Chrono Trigger. There's barely any double/triple techs, which was one of Trigger's best features and is quite the shame because Cross has so many characters to choose from, and essentially tells you that everything you did in Trigger was all for nothing and that you BACONBACONBACONBACONed up.
Aside from that, it's a great game!
PringlesXD
10-24-2011, 07:33 PM
Well, it's not exactly a direct sequel, so I don't mind.
I take it for a game on its own. <3
Lumina
10-24-2011, 07:42 PM
I don't understand that comment, what says a sequel has to use the same mechanics at all? Double and Tripple techs if anything were included as a nod. Through the entire game right up to the final battle, Elements are the focus, not combo attacks.
That stance is exactly one of the reasons why I think Cross in underappreciated. It's not Trigger version 2 and it was never designed to be, fans going into it expecting that set themselves up for a fall.
As far as your point about the plot, I would imagine you're talking about the one scene is Chronopolis where Chrono, Lucca, and Nadia are reaming out the party as they head toward Miguel. I think you're misinterpreting that scene. It's ruled out very quickly that the images of those three are merely remnants. When you talk to them again at Opassa, notice how different they are?

I don't understand that comment, what says a sequel has to use the same mechanics at all? Double and Tripple techs if anything were included as a nod. Through the entire game right up to the final battle, Elements are the focus, not combo attacks.
Then why bother including them if you're not gonna make use of them? As a nod? That's lazy. There's so many unique characters in Chrono Cross with all different types of attacks, that, yeah, it's pretty understandable to be disappointed that there's so few in the first place. Don't include them if you're not gonna make use of the feature, because then it's not so much a nod to Double/Triple techs, but more like a crappy tease.
That stance is exactly one of the reasons why I think Cross in underappreciated. It's not Trigger version 2 and it was never designed to be, fans going into it expecting that set themselves up for a fall.
But the game is advertised as such and even says on the back of the case that it is the long-awaited sequel to Chrono Trigger. It's completely understandable that fans of Trigger would be disappointed that the game is such a bad sequel to it!
By itself it's fine, which I'm sure the developers would've preferred the game to be seen as, but when you specifically throw in the characters from Chrono Trigger in, as well as make blatant references and story connections to it, then I can't sit here and say "It's not a sequel". It is, and there's no denying this.
So, fans of Trigger have every right to be disappointed to it as a continuation. Otherwise, it's a pretty damn good game.

Had a few free hours, so I decided to download some PS3 demos and check them out... and one of them, "Rochard," turned out to be a pretty cool game that I might just have to buy at some point (if you give it a look, be sure not to get deceived by the "rednecks in space" premise -- it really is a pretty cool puzzle platformer!).
One of the best parts of the game, though, is its soundtrack, which was apparently contributed to by a Finnish rock band called "Poets of the Fall." I may have to track down this OST at some point, because every song I heard in the game was fantastic! But these two in particular really stood out to me:
The opening theme, "Grinder's Blues":
