Hey there, I'm trying to find me a copy of either Ys I & II Chronicles for PSP, or I & II Complete/Chronicles for PC as I really want to play them. Does anyone know of anywhere I can order online that may ship to NZ? I can't find anything at online stores here, thanks!
(I'm hoping that if I can get the PC version, the English fan-translation should work. Right? I'm on Windows 7 64-bit)

Ys I & II (both versions) aren't available (localization-wise) for the PC right now. Could try amazon, or if all else fails, try getting the digital copy of Ys I & II Chronicles (if you don't mind digital).

Try creating a US PSN account then. And purchase US PSN cards.

The PSN is associated with the Vita system. In order to change account I need to factory reset the system to play the US version of YS 1&2.....I guess I can just stay logged on the US PSN since the AU PSN is really bad....

Sadly, we do not currently have any games released on AU PSN, though we have been looking into expanding to other territories. Even if we do eventually expand to AU, though, I don't think it will be anytime soon. Sorry. :(

Hey, thanks everyone - I have a normal, old 1000 PSP. So it should be fine for me to purchase the game of the PSN store, or whatever? I've never used it before, so I'll have to check it out.

I didn't find a discussion topic regarding Ys I & II Chronicles, I guess this one will have to do. I just finished Ys I from Ys I & II Chronicles on Normal; and I had a blast, a blast from the past! The game is completely "retro", but that never turned me off one bit!
As I've played Ys Origin before any other Ys game, I felt like Ys Origin was a remake from the original Ys. All the bosses, how Darm Tower works, everything! There wasn't a lot of character development, but as I've played Ys Origin before, I had all those *wink wink* moments and got every single reference in the game. I can't imagine how it'd be to see Reah and Feena and not know that they're the Goddesses, it's almost funny that a newcomer wouldn't know.
I'll start Ys II tomorrow, as soon as I can. I was going to try Nightmare Mode on Ys I before that, but after having the last boss being a pain in the BACONBACONBACON, I'll try leaving that for sometime in the future. Loooong future.

Shizuka: Glad you enjoyed Ys I. Can't wait to hear your thoughts after you play through Ys II -- it's one of my favorites in the series, and is an improvement upon its predecessor in pretty much every regard. There are so many things in Ys II that were just soooo ahead of their time... it's hard to believe the game premiered in 1988, as a lot of its ideas feel fresh even by today's standards!
Pelerin: Somehow, I missed your response -- I'm sorry I've gone this long without replying! You should be able to purchase Ys I & II Chronicles off of PSN, though it might be tricky accessing the American (or European) PSN store from New Zealand. Do you have a PS3? If so, it might prove at least a little easier... but even if you don't, I'm sure we can make it work!

And I agree with Tom on Ys II. Of the games I've played only Origin and Oath rank higher than it in my list.

I've only read great things about it, I get the feeling I'll LOVE the game!

Thank you for the tip, just edited the post! So far for me, Origin > I (I & II Chronicles). I'll play all the other games I can get my hands on, and I'll be sure to talk about it as I finish them.

If you liked Origin, you'll definitely enjoy Felghana. And probably Napishtim, too! And Seven. And... well, the whole damned series. They're all good! ;)

I'll play them chronologically, as much as I can. It'll probably go like Origin - I - II - Oath in Felghana - Ark of Napishtim - Seven. I won't be able to wait for Ys Celceta until I can play Napishtim and Seven.

And I've now finished Ys II as well. I gotta say, it was an emotional ride (to a certain extent) better than Ys I, and improves everything from the first game.
It also brings the Ys Origin references to a full closure, and it'd seem that Falcom did both games as one experience, where if you do one without the other, you'll be getting the incomplete experience.
The story is quite interesting, way more than Ys I, and brings a lot of new and cheerful characters to the cast, but never going into the dark-side of the story. I felt that that was the only lacking part of the game, where we barely get Keith's story explained (and I though he was Dogi for most part of the game...).
I knew those characters could be descendant from the Priests, because of Ys Origin story, but to this time, I don't know what role Lilia had overall. Her mother had magic, so it'd seem as she was a Priest descendant as well, but that isn't said.
Was Darm, Ys II last boss, the Fact Priest, father of Hugo and Toal, from Ys Origin? That part seemed really similar to the one from Ys Origin, but they didn't quite extended that story as well. Nice to see Zava and Dalles, though.
At the end of the game, after the credits, it shows Feena and Reah holding the Black Pearl with the Roos giving their offerings. Was that from after Ys II story, i.e. they had to seal the Black Pearl once again, or just an ending animation to show what they did for all those 700 years?
Anyway, I digress. The game is very nice, and to get both games on the same package feels just right, and I want to thank XSEED for bringing this one to NA, even if Atlus brought the DS version years ago. The PSP version seems like the ultimate version, and it'd be a shame if XSEED didn't bring the game because of Atlus' DS version.
I didn't finish this game earlier because I was entertained with Sound Shapes when it was released, but now that I finished it, I'll play another game before I get back to the Ys series.
Ys Origin, Ys I & II: complete. Next Ys game: Ys Oath in Felghana. Stay tuned...

Ys II is excellent. I still hate Zava though.
And apart from Lillia looking incredibly scary it has the best intro of any Ys game I've played. I like how it fills the gap between the two games, and even references the pre-Origin events when Ys was raised.

Your suspicious as to the true identity of Ys II's final boss is correct, too, BTW. ;) And I think that scene at the end, after the credits, is indeed supposed to take place after Ys II. Poor Reah and Feena. :(

Chaos and Tom, any clue on what Lilia's purpose was supposed to be on Ys II? Does she appear on future games, or was she just a one-game lover?

She makes a cameo in Ys IV as well (though I'm not sure if she'll appear in Celceta or not), and is heavily hinted at being the girl Adol eventually chooses... though ultimately, she's the one-game lover of Ys II, more or less. Since you haven't played the other Ys games, you aren't used to this yet... but Adol's got a Lilia in every game, pretty much. She's not ACTUALLY Lilia, of course, but she's usually got a very similar personality and serves as the love interest for that game, then is never heard from again.
Think of them like Bond girls. ;)

I had that feeling it was going to be a "thing" for all games to come, that Adol would get a chick on every game. Oh man, such a manBACONBACONBACONBACONBACON, but I'd fall in love for him if I had the chance as well. Oh my, that red-haired punk! ♥
That is, not to mention the thousands of female (and a few male, I'd say) NPCs that find Adol pretty charming, handsome and that they'd jump on him if they got the chance.

Adol would have better taste than to choose Lilia. I'd hope.

No, I agree. Not that there's anything WRONG with Lilia, strictly speaking... but he's had far better choices in other games. I actually think Aisha from Ys Seven is my current favorite... but failing her (since she kinda seems to have a love-hate thing with Dogi instead), Olha or even Elena would be better-suited to him than Lilia.
Or possibly Karna, but man, Karna's almost too good for him. ;)
I'd take Lilia over Niena, Leeza or (shudder) Terra, though.

The only familiar choices for me so far would be Feena and Lilia. I've yet to start Oath in Felghana, Ark of Napishtim and Seven, but I'm sure I'll meet a lot of interesting women interested on Adol.

I don't know how Adol and Terra were in Ys V, but I can only imagine his response to her showing up in VI was something along the lines of "Maybe I shouldn't have killed that giant wall-beast..."

Joshua hands down. Then again, there's more females in trails in the sky then all of the ys games combined.

I dunno, if you count random NPCs, Adol may come out on top. After all, if she's female and an NPC in the Ys games, she's in love with Adol. ;)

I always felt that Olha was just right for Adol. I have no idea why. Though it could be because she's just one of my favorite females in the series, so I have a bias for her.
Agreed on Karna. ;)
Watch, we find out in a later installment that Adol has a childhood friend from his hometown. The first heart broken/Original Christin girl! Admittedly, I wouldn't be against that cliche at all... And it would be interesting to see what kind of side-effects 8+ years of no Adol would bring to a lady. :p

Can we also count the possible men that could have fallen for Joshua, whenever he's forced to cross-dress too? ;)

Imma poke my head in here... As I mentioned in another topic, I fear my PSP 3000 is dying... Or is it Ys Chronicles being buggy? Disc is perfect, but I swear I remember hearing about an issue with it... Been trying to look it up with no luck yet... I'm just worried to go back and play and have it happen again at a critical part :/
Shizuka
08-21-2012, 03:28 AM
What's the issue? Slowdown, loading times, glitches?
Terro
08-21-2012, 03:36 AM
My bad, thought I posted it in this topic already. So SEVERAL times during Ys II the UMD reader made noises, sounds like it shut off (sometimes with the music stopped), and then immediately it acts like I hit the home button with the "would you like to quit? yes/no" screen pop up :/ It even happened twice on the first boss battle, killing me the first time it did that... I'm reluctant to play it right now because of it :/
Shizuka
08-21-2012, 03:37 AM
Does that happen only when you're playing Ys II? Ys I and other UMD games are working properly?
Terro
08-21-2012, 03:41 AM
This is the first time I've had this happen, so I'm not quite sure. Guess I'll go mess around on one of my casual games like Darkstalkers. Should be a good tester, since the load times on it are terrible :p
Shizuka
08-21-2012, 03:42 AM
It could be your PSP, your UMD drive or the Ys I & II UMD. Try testing Ys I after testing other UMD games.
Terro
08-21-2012, 04:24 AM
Alright, played a full arcade game of Darkstalkers, no issues. Went back to mess around on Ys I. No issues. I noticed on Ys II, it happened twice when I went to open a treasure box (worked the third try), and in the middle of the first boss fight, and then I think once or twice during a couple enemies coming after me. So it was pretty random... Either way, think I'll give the PSP a rest for the night until I find out what's up. Sucks, cause I really want to get back to playing it >_<

Oof. Sorry to say, Terro, but that's your PSP. My Hatsune Miku PSP-3000 has the same issue, and it started off exactly like yours... and then it began happening more and more frequently, and then it started happening on *every* UMD game. Now, I can't even go 5 minutes playing any game on UMD without that happening incessantly, to the point that it becomes impossible to actually continue playing.
It's apparently a factory defect with a lot of 3000-series (and some 2000-series) PSPs, and Sony *should* be able to fix it for you. My Miku PSP is a lost cause, though, sadly, because I imported it from Japan -- which means Sony America won't touch it, and Sony Japan doesn't support overseas customers.
There's a temporary fix you can try, which involves very slightly and very carefully bending those four metal prongs on the inside of the UMD case forward a little bit, causing the disc tray to hold the UMD against the system a lot more tightly. It *might* fix your problem permanently, but it's more likely that it either won't work at all, or it'll only delay the inevitable (temporarily fixing it for a week or two before it comes back full force). And if you're not super-duper careful, you could easily snap off one of those prongs (since they're super-brittle), which would be REALLY bad.
At any rate, I'm sorry to hear this issue struck your PSP -- but hopefully, you'll be able to get support from Sony and have it fixed up for you.

This happened to my PSP recently. I tried bending the prongs, but it didn't really help too much. Then what I did was I took a small square piece of foam and then I stick that in behind the UMD, so it sits between the UMD and the door. It adds a little bit more pressure on the UMD pushing it inwards. It has to be a really thin piece of foam though, or else the UMD drive door won't shut. And it has to be positioned right in the middle. It's kind of a ridiculous fix, but it works great for me.

This is what I'm doing. And yeah, I had to cut the piece thinner because the door wouldn't close. Hope it'll be enough to not have issues (and I'll try not to tilt it while I play either). Then it's back to II tonight :D The fact that Adol can FINALLY use magic, makes me already see why people enjoy this one ALOT more than I. Limited magic, but still a projectile!!

One thing I only learned near the end of the game is that you can CHARGE the Fire Magic, and that makes the magic overpower the entire game. Way better than spamming the magic.
Terro
08-21-2012, 08:52 PM
I'll have to keep that in mind :p With the first boss as an example, sometimes it's best to spam a few shots so you have time to run. I guess it'll depend on what the other bosses are like though. Still, sometimes chip damage is a good thing.
Shizuka
08-21-2012, 09:14 PM
No, every single boss is better with the charged shot. Charge your shot, and when the first boss opens its arms, you use the magic.
