For someone new to the Ys series, which version of Oath is the better one to get? The PSP version of the Steam version?

Welcome new member! Well the PC has achievements and widescreen support while the PSP version has voice acting and extra features the PC version doesn't have.
Though, it's really up to you. :) Or you could give the upcoming Ys Origin a try.

Or you could get both and really support Xseed. Remember when you double dip* everyone wins. ;)
*Except with chip or vegetable dip at parties you really shouldn't double dip at those it's not polite.

I personally would go for the Steam version because it looks soo much smoother. If you buy PSP games from PSN then you should get both since they are cheap and it would help Xseed and Falcom.

I know I shouldn't play favorites... but personally, I like the PSP version better due to the voice-acting, the selectable soundtracks, the addition of room retry, the addition of a prologue and the inclusion of double-boost (which some say breaks the game, but I say it balances it really well).
It all comes down to what matters more to you, though: if you care more about visual fidelity, achievements and leaderboards, the Steam version is definitely the better choice. If you care more about voice-acting and gameplay features, go for the PSP.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I think I'll be going with the PSP version, though after reading some of the threads here I'll probably start with Ys 7. Any idea if the Ys 7 limited edition will ever be back in stock in the Xseed store?

I don't know if the official limited edition will be back in the store but I do know that you can buy all the components for a good price from the store. That's what I did the only real downside is that you can't get the nifty box to keep.it all in.

Doubt it will ever be available new anywhere, unless somebody finds some stock in a warehouse somewhere.
But yeah, you can buy all the contents of the LE from XSEED's store. Map+Artbook+Soundtrack, I didn't buy the LE but I ended up getting all three of those anyway (mainly because I wanted the Oath + Seven soundtracks and I needed to spend $10 more.....)
And personally I'd go with the PC version, but then again I'd go with the PC version of any game unless it happens to be broken somehow.

I personally prefer the steam version due to it's graphical superiority and achievements.

In my opinion: Steam version.
Harder (thus) more replayability value, looks better and you can use an arcade stick to play it.
I really dislike PSP's double boost.

Hey, I was in this predicament! Well, my choice doesn't really have bearing here-I picked Steam because I share my PSP with my friend [it's technically hers, but I play it the most. ;p] My laptop is ALWAYS with me, so it was a no brainer.
Also, if you're the type whose eyes get tired or strained easier, I'll play Captain Obvious and say go Steam because it's full-screen, of course. :D Since everyone else covered the differences between versions pretty well, I'll add that you could always consider your gaming preferences. If you're on the bus for a commute every day, the PSP version is a good buy, but the Steam version is nice if you're often at home, or don't typically play handheld titles other than when you're bored during a car trip. :>

I have both, and the PC version is by far my favorite. Seeing the art on a high resolution monitor is stunning. The game is also lightening fast and 60+ fps. I played it with a wired xbox360 controller for added comfort. Although I'm sure you will like both.

Hmm, it kinda is. What I liked about the boss battles in Ys3 was that you can't heal at all.
In my opinion, the double boost defeats the purpose and makes the game much, much easier (which isn't really a bad thing, but IMO it takes away from the experience).

Well, it seems to make the game a little less frustrating at least for me, like the Chester Boss fight and especially Galbalan.

Double boost mode does in fact provide somewhat of an "unfair" advantage, though "unfair" is a strong word to use here since from what I've experienced, you could beat a boss without boost bar reaching the double stage.
Like with Galbalan, I once defeated him without being hit once on inferno mode and my boost bar didn't even reach one full bar. (so ya no hit and no boost mode victory, since I couldn't even use boost mode anyway)
