Has anyone here played this? It looks great! I've never played a game in the Shining series, but I'd definitely pick this one up if it came over.

Yup it truly seems a great game. I've been told the first game was a crap, but the sequel a good game... I should try, but I have a lot of other PS2 games to play (FF XII IZJS and others), and I can play on it only during the summer time );

Hey, thats not Shining Tears. Get outta town, Fabrizio!
They make it sound like it's Shining Force with Valkyria Chronicle gameplay mechanics, which of course means it'd be awesome. And hey, more Taka Tony designs. Sigh, his games have not had a good track record getting here, have they? :(

Dithering really is a problem with PSP games...

I could see it happening as a "near-last title on the PSP" sort of thing. We're going to be getting PSP titles in Japan up until at least the end of this year and possibly longer due to the strength of the platform in Japan, so content publishers need to be prepared for the idea of picking up PSP titles still.
Now they'll probably be digital-only due to retailer refusal to carry PSP stock, but the content will still be there.

I wanted this so bad when I seen it just because it runs off Valkyria Chronicle's engine. So sad it was made on the PSP so late... I miss VC. I'd want XSEED to pickup VC3 more in that case.

that and hope they release the next VC on a console.

The biggest problem with this one, of course, is that it's a SEGA property, and so far they've shown a marked reluctance to license their IPs to third parties. That would be the biggest hurdle this faces, if anything.

That is true. You'd think with all the MAJOR financial issues they've had recently that they'd be a bit less reluctant on that front when their American release strategy now ignores most of their titles in favor of guaranteed sellers, but this industry is not always logical on that point.

Shining's a bit different than Phantasy Star, Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles though. Does anyone realistically expect it to get a big budget PS3 sequel? That's the only way one of these games would be worth SEGA America's time, but even then would it sell well? Probably not given they've passed on Shining Force Feather and other games in the series on healthy platforms indicating low sales. So why not just let this franchise go out?

i'm inclined to disagree.
think about it for a second, the most recent games of that franchise we got were Diablo esque beat em ups (which are kinda the opposite of strategy), which alot of the fans of the previous games (which were Strategy RPGs, again kinda the opposite audience) disliked, but when they abandoned localizing it in the West the moment it started to return to its roots, or at least went back to being more RPG like.
abandoning one audience (the fans of Strategy RPGs) for a new one (Diablo esque beat Up) rarely works, i mean look at G4, they've got like no one left.
the lack of sales on those last 2 localised games came from returns, used sales (but that applies to all games released, so it doesn't count), and negative word of mouth.

Bummer
This game seems like it would have been a lot cooler as a real time action rpg
That said i do love the art style. I would totally buy this if it were brought over

Your right, it's better ;)
Here's some Shining Hearts (another Shining game on PSP we didn't get, but with a top-down 2D perspective):

But did third parties show their interest in the past for SEGA Japanese-only properties ?

Haha I knew it ^^ It could be a great game for Xseed to localize.

They're reportedly gotten a ton of offers for Valkyria 3 and several other Shining titles (especially Shining Hearts), and neither one of those have been released, so yes.

They clearly don't want someone else to publish VC 3 and other Japanese games...That sucks :(
