View Full Version : 3 steps for making someone want to play an Ys game
Chelli

Step 1: Have them listen to the Chronicles version of To Make The End Of Battle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9Mam93QIQo
Step 2: Tell them that the Ys games are as awesome as that song ALL THE TIME.
Step 3: This person will want to play an Ys game.
This is a tried-and-tested method to get someone interested in Ys.
(Note: In case of the .0000000000001% chance that this method will not work, have this person watch you play Ys II and show them how enemies explode into chunks when you defeat them. If neither of these methods work, then the person you are trying to convert to the Ys religion is already beyond salvation.)

It doesn't have to be To Make The End Of Battle. I bet quite many Ys songs work for that :)
The one I have been using is Valestein Castle - works well I'd say hehe

Lailmith thats true, not just To Make the End of Battle. To be honest, S.S.H.'s arrangement of Valestein castle is basically what lured me to playing Ys.
I use their live performances when I am trying to lure friends to trying Ys. :)

How about Vacant interference and Mother Earth Altago and Steeling the will to fight and A searing trouble and.... shut your trap conure XD

Yeah, it can be pretty much any Ys song, but I chose To Make the End of Battle. :p

I've got Ys 7 waiting for me to play....but there's just too much other stuff right now. Oh well, I'll be taking my psp with me to Japan, so I'll probably play it on the flight over.

Ys should be priority, and never be waiting. D:
As for the topic, I always use Chronicles version of To Make the End of Battle. Usually with Tom's video though (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoSfssNozZw). :)

If an Ys and an Im@s were ever to be release on the same day, my brain would explode from the large amounts of NOT-COMPUTING. Throw a CAVE game on that same day, then somebody probably set up that elaborate trolling. D:
I'd play Ys over Idols because all the good songs and outfits would be DLC
AweOfShe

Truth be told, that's the same reason why I'd play Ys over it as well. All the best stuff is always DLC. :(
That and at least Ys will always guarantee you a finished/complete game. Unlike a lot of games this gen. :P

I still watch it a lot. Even now, I still give that reaction! :D
I love everything about it. The music was a huge factor, yes, but that video is absolute love. <3
I actually showed a ton of different videos when getting my friends into Ys 7. I think the one I shared most was this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAjploBRpZA). That one video alone got four of my friends from my PSU Ventrilo Channel to buy Ys 7. :)

Oh, hey, Gintoki, I didn't realize you'd never played Ys Seven before (never played any Ys game before?). Curious what you'll think of the series, though I imagine you'll love it... because really, how can anyone not? ;)
As for songs I'd play to convince someone the series is worth checking out... man, there are so many options! Having been working on Ys Origin for the last several weeks, though, I'm currently leaning toward Silent Desert:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQyE4SqOF6c
But yeah... To Make the End of Battle, First Step Towards Wars, Subrerranean Canal, Ice Ridge of Noltia, Be Careful, Seal of Time, The Strongest Foe, Battle #58, A Great Ordeal, Walking the Path of Legend, Crimson Ruins, Break Into Territory, Release of the Far West Ocean, Mighty Obstacle, Ernst, The Depth Napishtim, Genesis Beyond the Beginning, Scars of the Divine Wing, Innocent Primeval Breaker, Mother Earth Altago, Vacant Interference, Desert of Despair, Crossing Rage, To Reveal the Way To Go... and that's just the start of the list! (:

I think Tom just listed most of my favorite songs, though he somehow missed Valestein Castle?! I didn't actually care for Crossing Rage much, for some reason. Fun battle theme, but beyond that it just didn't do much for me.
Friend at work and I were discussing soundtracks and the song I "won" our conversation with was Battlefield. He pretty much said it was more awesome than anything he could bring to the table ;)

Tom only listed the start of the very long list. There is more too if you want to keep listing. Final Battle, Termination, Palace of Solomon, Steeling the Will to Fight, The Last Moment of the Dark and so on. There is just so many :)
And nobody listed Over drive?

Valestein Castle and Battleground are indeed both excellent tracks to add to that list. As are all of Lalimith's suggestions. (:

I like your list. I would add Karna, Field, Burning Sword, and the Dawn of Ys from Ys IV plus The Boy's Got Wings and A Searing Struggle from Oath as well.

I like pretty much every song that has been listed so far but just to add something that seems to get looked over often and isn't hardcore rock. Its also pretty much one of my favorite tracks in the series. I particularly like the part that starts from 1:07 and on.

I got my friend to play Ys Seven by basically shoving my artbook in her face and telling her "it has no random encounters and no turn-based fighting and you will be assimilated". Next time I'll try the music approach, it seems a little less violent.

That's definitely one of my favorites from Ys VI. I also love Ruins of Amnesia:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fsv8FSgzGu0
Which I always associate with Water Prison from Ys Origin for some reason... I guess because they're both soft and melodic, but driven by a really addictive and pretty much nonstop line of percussion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZBymxFCfLc
Either way, both tracks are freaking awesome, and perfectly exemplify Falcom Sound Team's diversity.
...As does pretty much any town theme from any Falcom game. Like, literally ANY. ;)

Ohhh Water Prison, I should have mentioned that one, its also one of my favorite not hardcore rock ones. One of those themes that I listen to whenever I am doing homework lol.
On a more on-topic note, something I did to get my friend to Ys was talk about how awesome Adol was and about Dogi's wallcrushing scenes. He really fell in love with Adol after playing Ys Seven, so much that when I had him try Origin on my computer, he couldn't get into it because no Adol (though I think it was because he decided to start with Hugo and his gameplay is kinda...bland and unfun..). Why must he always start with the coolest looking character rather than what the game suggest you start with =/
I couldn't get him to try Yunica either cuz to girly. It was upsetting.
Chaosblade
03-26-2012, 03:24 PM
Isn't Hugo recommended for novices?
Yunica wields and axe in close combat. I'd say she's more manly than the magic Fact guy. ;)
Kirbs
03-26-2012, 03:39 PM
Yeah but Yunica is the first thing you see and the one that is implied to have Adol-like gameplay. In fact I even told him that just incase "Start with Yunica she has the gameplay most similar to Oath in Felghana Adol" but nope.

I almost certain he would have Tom. But alas....
I hope he likes Oath in Felghana once I get him to buy it...
It has Adol and Dogi so he can't complain. For whatever reason he fell in love with them both and Geis after playing Seven.

Story-wise I'd say it is the better to start with Yunica too.
Wyrdwad
03-26-2012, 04:41 PM
Technically, the game does recommend you start with Hugo on the character select screen... though that recommendation is going to be dropped in the English version, because honestly, it's not really any easier to play as Hugo than it is to play as Yunica, and it's probably better if the player just chooses which character he/she is more interested in starting with.
-Tom

I agree with that, if only because I recall Yunica having a relatively bland story compared to the other two.
It also helps diversify the game if you're playing it all at once. Yunica plays nothing like Hugo who plays nothing like "Claw." But if you went Hugo -> Yunica -> "Claw" the latter two might feel a little samey since they're both melee characters.
Kirbs
03-26-2012, 04:51 PM
I thought otherwise. Hugo's was a lot more bland to me...I got more warm feelings out of Yunica's story than Hugo's especially after Roy dies.

I basically tried this when trying to get one of my friends to play Oath (now that it is on Steam), and he did not seem interested really, at all. I also tried telling him about the awesome combat and the mild platforming (I don't think that part helped), but still, nothing. What should I do? ;_; Is he doomed to forever be Ysless?

I sent him a link, but I am not sure if he actually listened to it. I suppose that I could press that a bit more, and maybe send some for the actual game I am trying to get him to try. X3
What are some awesome Oath songs that would work?
Kirbs

A bunch have been recommended already look at one of Tom's posts earlier in the thread. I'll give my personal favorites from Oath though: Be Careful, Searing Struggle, Seal of Time, Valestine Castle.
I generally like ALL the tracks though.
Go nuts.

Valestein Castle, Searing Struggle, Steeling the Will to Fight, Ilburn Ruins, The Strongest Foe, Seal of Time, Be Careful, Believe in my Heart, and so on.
There is no weak tracks in Oath :) And most of the tracks are just pure awesome I'd say

Valestein Castle is a good choice, my favorite track of the game. If the whole anime thing doesn't turn him off, you show him Falcom's trailer for the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CJh-RFq4gQ). I like it better than XSEED's (no offense intended).

Does gifting copies to each of your Steam friends count? XD
Then you have to nag them constantly.

Can I gift stuff thru the PSN? I would so send several people Chronicles... (Since I can't find hard copies on Amazon anymore.)

They also "fixed" Release of the Far West Ocean. Tom is probably going to chime in preferring the original though!
I like a number of the redone Ark tracks Falcom has put out. With the Origin soundtrack growing on me (and quite a bit at that), Ark falls back into the lowly position of weakest Ys OST (that I've heard). Has a handful of fantastic songs, but then everything else just weighs it down.

Wyrdwad

As do I, as Chaosblade predicted. ;)
And while I used to think Ys VI was one of the weakest soundtracks in the series, it's really grown on me over time. I now find it to be one of the most listenable -- not best, mind you, but most listenable. If I've got a long car ride, I'll put on Ys VI. Need to focus at work? I'll play Ys VI over headphones. It's like, the perfect background music for anything that requires focus and attention. (:
Weakest Ys OST, for me, is the generic response: Ys V. It has a handful of excellent tracks, but only a very small handful, and the rest are pure filler. There's not even a great intro theme or boss theme like you'd find in other Ys titles. The intro theme is serviceable, and the boss themes are all very average-sounding SNES fare. None of them sound like they belong in an Ys game to me.

Heh. Probably. (: Personally, I love old-school synth. I'll often listen to 8- and 16-bit music for pleasure!
A lot of Ys music should be a bit more up your alley, though, since much of it is NOT synthetic at all, instead played in a studio by Falcom's in-house JDK Band. This includes much of the soundtracks to Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys I & II Chronicles, as well as the opening theme and main boss theme from Ys Seven. And many of those could easily be instrumental tracks off of an 80s hair metal album. (:

I had no ulterior motives, I swear. In fact, posting this also led to me posting a Vantage Master Portable song in the "Non-XSEED game music you should hear" thread on the Video Games board, because it reminded me of Falcom JDK Band's awesomeness!
EDIT: Ah, did you not say what you meant? I honestly didn't even notice. That was a totally genuine reply!

I don't have a problem with Seven's OST due to how it was handled. Despite having a lot of synth, it's probably still my third favorite or so. It's just not a synthesized guitar, or violin, or some other instrument that almost always sound bad when it's "faked" ;)
I don't mind old school style synth either, for example, the VVVVVV soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dclghhnW4oU) is amazing (make sure to switch to 720p, it's a day and night difference).
It's also cool when some tracks leave their 8-bit roots behind though, for instance, this Contra track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5JlGQ5orL8), which the original composer has actually commented on and said he guy absolutely nailed his original vision and gave it the thumbs up.
