Played through Ys V Expert in japanese and beat the game a few days ago, man was it ever tough when you progressed into the game. Without giving any spoilers, let me tell you what I thought about the game. I loved the environments for one, they were very lush and detailed (especially for a SFC title). The music was fantastic, most of it felt ahead of its time and some of the songs on there sounded like they belong on a newer console!
As for the gameplay, I had little to no problem with the battle system. I actually got accustomed to it and had a nice feel (careful with the jumping though). Even though I didn't have much understanding with the story, you can still get a hint of what happens in the cutscenes and other events like in other games you play with Japanese text.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience and this title may very well become my favorite of the Ys series. The plot does seem really interesting and it had stuff that I looked for in a storyline (from what I understood). I plan to replay the game this time learning to read the kanji and katakana font in the game. I played though once just to get a feel of how things are in the game so that way as i'm learning the text I would understand what to do in the game as I go.
One last thing, if you were to play the game, start with the original version THEN play Expert Mode. Expert is really, really tough if its your first time playing.
I hope you all enjoyed my review!
