I ended up getting some PSN cash on sale for half off meaning I could get Corpse Party for $10, so I jumped on it.

I haven't had much time to play it (I've only cleared chapter 1 and all it's endings) due to Skyward Sword, but one thing that has kind of "put me off" so far was some of the comments made by Seiko.

I'm just curious, does she really talk about "buttering up her pooper" or use phrases like "dat a.s.s." in the Japanese version, or were liberties taken with the writing of these moments? I mean I know she must make mention of those topics somehow, but the way they're handled feels extremely out of place, distracting, and unfunny given the situation they characters in.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't mean to critisize. I'm just finding it very difficult to get immersed into the atmosphere when stuff like that happens. I go from being all on edge to "... uh, really?".

Aww, it's funny. You'll see that she does that to try and cool Naomi down.

Yep, she's perverted like that, haha. :p
YAY, glad you could get the game! ;)

Well, its not a translation, its a localization, and the way she says what she does, does imply that she's being positively goofy about it. So, yes, it does suit her character. She's a very, erm, frank girl.

I guess it's not so much what she says that bothers me, but how she says it. I mean I can get that she's trying to cut the tension, but I think the specific dialogue chosen makes it a little awkward.

I guess I was just curious to see if that's how she really spoke in the Japanese version (word choice specifically) or if Tom was just having a little fun with those lines, and if the later, maybe this could be good feedback.

You'll get over it soon, really. :)

Well, like I said, Seiko is a pervert, and she's also very frank about the way she speaks. Aside from one certain thing, she'll say what she wants how she wants.

I get what you're saying.

My issue isn't with the character and how she's intended to be viewed, so much as the word choice in those scenes. You can say the same thing many different ways and have it come across very different based on how you say it after all.

I'm hoping for Tom to chime in on this at some point.

What'd you want her to say? "Behold! I go forth to plaster my tookus!" lol

I don't know, I'm not in games localization.

All I know is the current phrases sounded awkward to me, and I was curious as to how it compared to the original.

I'd rather get some americanization on the games instead of getting a bland and dull script like in the Agarest games.

What is she, the Queen of England? xD

She is a lot of things to a lot of people!

It's a direct translation of the Japanese, but rephrased to fit with Seiko's personality. She's literally saying something like, "Thanks, I'm going to go rub it on right now." And the "dat a s s" thing? She's literally saying, "The shape of your a s s...", in the most base and suggestive manner possible. (Grrr, filters!)

Why did I reword these as I did? Because there's a certain nuance to the way Seiko speaks that suggests a complete and utter disregard for good taste and appropriateness. She's constantly saying things in the bluntest, most crass ways the Japanese language has to offer -- and she uses this as a defense mechanism. When she's freaked out, she attempts to lighten the mood with references to buttocks and inappropriate comments. It's the only way she can keep herself from going totally nuts.

And as you'll see later in the chapter (if you haven't already), Naomi totally scolds her for it, expressing utter disgust at Seiko for being so happy-go-lucky in such a hopeless situation. This also sobers Seiko a bit, causing her to be as serious as you'll ever see her in this game.

So yeah... I feel the phrasing I chose for these scenes is wholly appropriate to Seiko's personality and the intended impact of her scenes, but I do appreciate your feedback, and I'm sorry if you're finding it distracting.

-Tom

Well, at least she doesn't pant or wheeze or sob all the time, like my lovely Ayumi. :)
I swear, she must have asthma or something. :p

Cool, thanks for the info Tom. Again I really didn't mean it to criticize your work at all, I was honestly just curious about the differences between languages. Sorry if it at all seemed like I was, I have great respect for the work that you do.

I think Shizuka hit the nail on the head as far as why it seems a little odd to me though. The phrases in question definitely feel "americanized" and I guess It's just a bit "startling", for lack of a better term, to see a Japanese teen speaking like that.

Anyway, the game is really cool so far, thanks so much for spearheading the project and getting it into our hands!

That whole scene felt a little out of place. Not the translation (though I've never heard anyone actually use the word "popper"), which gave me a chuckle, but why would she care about her BACONBACONBACON being dry in that situation? But everyone's explanation of it being her way to lighten the mood seems to fit. Still, I wonder how many people carry BACONBACONBACON cream around, lol.

Well, technically it isn't a s s cream at all, it's just lotion. As for the scene itself, I suppose it's just another way of keeping herself calm. "Dat a s s", though... You do realize that someone has to take that cg of Seiko and Naomi in the Infirmary and photoshop sunglasses onto Seiko, now, right?

Well for me im the vulgar funny one amongst my friends so her type of levity kinda is on par with my own.... and I think it halps out at the end of the day since for a situation so dark a lil smile here and there does wonders

Eh, it's lame.

[Sorry, I removed the image due to bad taste.]

I made her wear the superstar sunglasses, since the gentleman ghost don't want to.

It's pretty lame...
Though I always wonder about this CG...In game Naomi is in the corner with her head at the top left corner of the room.
The CG implies shes laying upside down on the bed.

This was Boyfriend's favorite scene in the entire chapter. He spouts this EVERY time he goes to the bathroom now. ;p

I'm happy, tbh. He's using it as an example of humor AND horror in the game, and he's managed to sell friends and customers on CP by saying "Yeah, there's a lot of dialogue before creepy CGs and death scenes, but it's good/funny dialogue, see?" [He works at a Game Store, so he's trying to shuck PSN cards off on people when they check out ;p]
