So I spoiled myself and ordered a copy of Dawn of Ys, if my shipping info is right I should get it around the middle of next week. Figure the experience will be different enough from the Vita game that it's worth picking up, plus it was a lot less expensive than I thought it would be for a complete copy.
Of course, I don't have a TG16, I planned on just emulating it... but it looks like that's a little more complicated than I thought. So I guess I have a couple questions.
1) You can play through the game on an emulator, right? I've seen videos of it, so I assume something is compatible with it.
2) And what's the best emulator for this? Am I going to have to shell out for that Magic Engine one, or is there a free one that works well with the game? Seems like all of the free ones aren't very good, especially with CD games.
And I'm assuming an emulation thread is okay as long as there is a legit copy of the game involved. That's how it is most places at least. I'll probably end up posting a picture of the game once I get it out of excitement regardless :p

Magic Engine is your best bet. And yeah, you'll probably have to shell out the money for a registered copy of it... but it's worth it. It's pretty much a perfect mimicry of PC-Engine hardware in every way.
Alternately, you can always buy the game on J-PSN or Virtual Console, as I believe it's available in both places.

But then he wouldn't be able to apply the English patch. :U

Never mind, then! ;)

Actually it looks like Magic Engine isn't even being actively developed anymore. So hopefully it would already play the game near-perfectly, Ys IV isn't on the site, only Ys III.
I see some people recommending Ootake since it's still being developed (and it's free) but I can't find anything specific in the way of compatibility. Might try that out once the game arrives, and if it doesn't work I'll go for Magic Engine.

I can tell that I personally used Magic Engine (I don't own a PC-Engine or TurboGrafx-16), and the game ran flawlessly.

That's the kind of thing I wanted to hear, thanks! :D If the free emulator doesn't work out then at least I know that one will.

So, patch wants the iso file to be a specific size - 771,213,744 or 772,634,352. Mine is getting ripped at 771,566,544. Any programs that are known to do it right? The one recommended in the patch readme doesn't work, it refuses to read the file as anything other than an audio CD.
And I have the game running off the disc with the free emulator. Doesn't seem like the sound (other than voices) worked though. Or maybe there just isn't any music on the main menu.

Updating again since the forumsplosion killed my post before anyone responded to it.
Got the game ripped properly using Turborip, worked perfectly since it's intended for TG games. The 64-bit compatible version was kind of hidden though.
So the game is all patched up and Ootake seems to run it okay, until I get to the end of the cutscene at the beginning of the game where some creepy guys seem to be trying to summon a blob monster. Just stops at a black screen there. Some people mentioned playing it on that emulator before so there should be some way around that.
It did the EXACT same thing for me at that part!!! I eventually got past it, I'll look and see if there was anything I did to get it to work. However, I feel like one day I just simply made it past that part and haven't run into any problems since. Let me get back to you.
